One of the most common game fantasies as a player is to be able to have divine-like powers and manipulate the game world on a large scale. But is there any play-to-earn God game currently available? Well, look no more! Climb to that heavenly hot seat and let your wrath be known throughout the land in Apeiron – a God game with NFTs where you can flex your management game muscles on a cosmic scale.
God games first gained its traction when entries like Populous surfaced together with other notable titles. This genre has never been an overpopulated category and into this space steps Hong Kong game developer company “Fooni Magus” with its P2E God game Apeiron which will have its closed beta on Q3 2022. Fooni Magus is a sister studio of Aither Entertainment. Both share the same founder but Aither Entertainment is focused on strategy games, whereas Foonie Magus is the blockchain-focused arm. Their previous game operation experience ensures some level of quality. Also reflecting the potential of this project is its knockout success with investors and gaming guilds, winning big support from blockchain investors and getting funds from heavy-hitting venture capitalist firms.
Apeiron is an updated version of the old God game classics with a twist of a modern roguelike action-adventure game. To begin playing, the player needs to have their own planet NFT that’s like a giant puzzle where the player combine elements to shape the environment to help grow the planet. Each planet has its own citizens called Doods that are a rambunctious bunch of simple-minded homunculi that reminds me so much of minions from the movie “Despicable Me”. These cute naïve creatures will pray, wishing for water to drink, fire to cook, rain to grow crops and so forth. So as a wandering God, it is the player’s sacred duty to unleash miracles and divine interventions to enable their civilization’s growth. Once the player has enough Dood followers, the player can summon their planetary avatar that will manifest into the world as a unique NFT. From there, the game goes in a completely new direction.
Once the player summoned their avatar, the battle part of Apeiron would be unlocked. It’s like an action role-playing game meets auto battler experience. The battle system is a merge of real-time strategy and card-based battle. The dungeons that the player can explore is like Dante’s Inferno where it is filled with trapped souls. But what’s next if you have finished all the dungeons and the civilization is at its maximum potential? Well, you can unleash the nuke by bringing forth Armageddon.
Apeiron is planning to be a lot of things, a God game, a roguelike action RPG with card-based battle and a tri-token modeled P2E project. With this wide scope, I can’t help but think if the team can really accomplish all these or they’re biting more than they can chew. The energy in blockchain gaming is palpable, all are eager to get in on new projects before they blow up. While it’s tempting to open the floodgates and let the good times roll, I think that limiting the growth of this project’s user base until they're sure that their system can scale accordingly from top to bottom is wise. Keeping growth at a certain pace will help make sure players will have smooth experience and prevent serious problems popping up later down the road.
Anyway, Apeiron is looking very promising from its unique ecosystem up to the gameplay trailer that has an excellent animation, appealing art and gleefully obnoxious sound effects from Doods’ gibberish-speaking language. This project looks like it has intrinsic entertainment value that will not just push players to chase rewards to the point that it will become a chore. Instead, I think this will be a game where players will be consistently rewarded for their time and participation – not just with tokens, but with enjoyment.
Apeiron is a Greek word for endless or infinite. It’s an apt title for a God game. We’ve already read about their comprehensive whitepaper, got to know their talented team, and saw their A-quality demo footage. If this experience will continue to progress from these solid foundations, then Apeiron would definitely be worthy of its name.
