An experienced team – Wagyu Gaming Studio, combines to put together Undead Blocks, their flagship game. Undead Blocks is created on the Etherium blockchain platform and is also being developed & designed in collaboration with Kevuru Games which is known to provide custom engineering and game art services to a lot of well-known clients such as Bandai Namco, Epic Games, etc. Undead Blocks is also well financed, with a $1.7M seed round completed in March. The game is 9 months in the making and their open beta was last May 26 which boosted the project’s popularity boasting their kill-to-earn model.
Undead Blocks is a multiplayer FPS. The player can choose to play in either solo or squad mode before being dropped in an apocalyptic map where they will try to survive as many waves of zombies as possible. There’s also a SpeedRun mode, where the players will attempt to take down waves of zombies as fast as they can. On top of these game modes, a rotating Daily Leaderboard Challenge will grant players the ability to earn much more.
At the start of each game, the players will only have a pistol and a combat knife but additional weapons that the players have unlocked can be found across the map. Every kill awards the player XP, with a bonus for killing zombies with a headshot. Aside from different weapons usable in the game, there will also be grenades like Molotov cocktails. Perks like Macho Dew, Reload Root Beer and Diet Sprint will be available in vending machines placed in different areas on the map that will provide buffs to your sprint, reload speed, etc.
Undead Blocks has a dual-token ecosystem. Gold ZBUX is the stable in-game reward currency which the players can earn by placing ranks on daily leaderboard or be purchased on the Wagyu Games website. The utility of this token includes purchase of exclusive weapon skins, character skins and perks. This token also has no withdrawal limit so players that need quick bucks can cash out whenever.
The other token is the Standard ZBUX, this will serve the purpose of increasing the value of players’ Weapon Loadout. This token is earned from slaying waves of zombies. This will not be available for purchase on the market so players will only earn this through extensive playtime and engaging in the game. This token is used to upgrade weapon stats in weapon loadout (damage, accuracy, fire rate etc.)
The Undead Blocks Arms Dealer Program offers passive income for gaming guilds and P2E investors by renting their Weapon Loadouts to scholars. Owners of Weapon Loadouts can list their Loadout gas-less on the Undead Blocks marketplace for rent to earn Gold and Standard ZBUX.
Undead Blocks brings back the nostalgia enjoyed by FPS zombie titles of the past. It promotes a team of friends coordinating and gaming together by killing hordes of undead, which reminds me of Left 4 Dead. Undead Blocks’ trailer also showed some thrilling scares, adrenaline-pumped action and staggering, spooky brain-eaters. This gives me the initial impression that this project will offer rich fright-fests.
Left 4 Dead remains one of the best zombie FPS I have played and the classic 4 people working together on a shooting carnage against hordes of zombies proved to be a recipe for success. Looking at Undead Blocks, it seems like the developers are planning to revive the genre with the similarity of L4D. The only downside I see is that Undead Blocks doesn’t seem to have any story. While L4D is not story driven as well, the open cinematic and small conversations the characters provide small snippets of it.
I just hope that there will be some sort of narrative to Undead Blocks than the bare bones that drive the action forward. If not then it should at least unfold the backstory through the environment. Stock it full of little details like having graffiti in the safe rooms, maps pinned to walls, piles of bodies and signs of desperate last stands. I would also like to hear some narratives from the characters to draw players in and make them feel all sorts of emotions like a good roller coaster. Without it, it only shows that blasting holes in the heads of shambling undead is more important than offering players depth further than that.
Undead Blocks has me excited with their gameplay trailer and Left 4 Dead vibes that are built almost entirely around cooperative multiplayer action. Undead Blocks is more gameplay driven rather than a story driven game. So if that’s not a problem for you then the repayable multiplayer experience in Undead Blocks can be worth checking out especially if you want to get ready for any impending zombie apocalypse. Just be sure to invite your friends.
