In the ever-evolving landscape of the digital age, where our attention is constantly fragmented, the fashion industry has adopted a strategy of dazzling promotional campaigns to seize the fleeting focus of consumers. The triumphant measure, it seems, lies in the success of commercials, ads, and videos. Yet, beneath the surface of these spectacular displays lies a bitter truth: the essence of a garment—its art and story—often fades into obscurity.
This observation is not aimed at well-established brands ( not all ), which skillfully leverage their heritage and consistently emphasize stories. For them, every runway becomes an immersive journey into their history and narrative. Instead, my concern is directed at emerging brands. In my view, we have reached a point where brands (I use the term loosely, as some may not truly embody the essence of a brand) prioritizing commercialism often outshine those genuinely infusing garments with art and story. In this ongoing struggle among smaller brands, the genuine artistic and narrative elements seem to take a back seat to commercial pursuits. This, in my opinion, has repercussions for brands, consumers, and cultural richness, though the impact may not be immediately apparent.
The reason for this consideration is that the concept of "commercial success" has become almost synonymous with the brilliance of promotional campaigns. The narrative begins with a striking ad, a captivating video, and a garment adorned with eye-catching graphics—sometimes not even original or meaningful, merely images placed on a T-shirt, hoodie, or any other garment. While these elements are undoubtedly indispensable in the modern market, two aspects trouble me: firstly, brands primarily focused on the commercial aspect, neglecting the heritage and essence of fashion, receive more recognition than those genuinely creating captivating pieces. Secondly, through this commercialism, the intrinsic value of a garment often gets overshadowed. In this article, I'll delve into the second point, leaving the exploration of the first for another time, though I may touch a little on it as well.
The emphasis on promotional brilliance, in my opinion, has given rise to a shallow fascination where consumers cherish the aesthetics, the blend of design with the garment, and the cool factor portrayed in the media. This trend makes me prompt a crucial question: Why should the success of a promotional campaign be the be-all and end-all? In the pursuit of reaching a vast audience, of appealing to everyone rather than someone, it seems that most brands in the industry have lost sight of the true rewarding goal—connecting with those who share a genuine vision, passion, and appreciation for the craft. They've lost sight of the “someone” they truly need. While I acknowledge that promotions amplify the voice and highlight the product, ( they may be a necessity in today’s world ) I feel that the aspects giving life to the brand and campaign—the art and the story of the garment—are often neglected.
The genuine value of a garment has never solely resided in its visual appeal; in fact, it has never been about visual appeal alone, but rather about the artistry and narrative woven into its fabric. The deluge of ads competing for our attention has led to oversaturation, where brands merely slap a graphic on a t-shirt, release it, and profit. Meanwhile, those daring to infuse meaning, investing in the art and story of a garment, find themselves relegated to the background.
What I yearn for is a recentering on the essence of a garment. This isn't just a plea for recognition, but rather a strategic move against the tide of passing trends and excessive consumption. By shining a spotlight on the art and story, brands can guide consumers to cherish their purchases and consider the impact of their choices. It catalyzes the shift from mindless consumption to mindful appreciation.
The prevailing trend of mindless consumption has profound consequences, impacting not only the industry but also shaping consumer behavior. The fixation on promotional brilliance has given rise to a culture of overspending on brands that prioritize surface-level aesthetics, a phenomenon particularly evident in the fast fashion sector which, in my opinion, accelerates the acceptance, disposal, and replacement of passing trends at an alarming pace, leading to environmental consequences and fostering a throwaway mentality.
The relentless bombardment of ads on social platforms plays a pivotal role in influencing consumer choices. Brands that prioritize art and storytelling often struggle to compete for attention against the allure of flashy visuals and catchy slogans. Addressing these issues becomes increasingly urgent as the fashion industry grapples with its environmental footprint and the impact of mindless consumerism. While I've observed a shift in consumer behavior after the pandemic, where mindfulness is gaining importance, I still witness the mindless purchase of garments that are seldom worn more than once or twice.
It's time to make art matter again; a fundamental shift in perspective is necessary. By recognizing the true worth of fashion beyond its promotional prowess, consumers can cultivate a deeper appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship behind each garment. This shift involves moving away from a culture of quantity towards a focus on quality and shifting from addressing everyone to focusing solely on someone.
The narrative of a garment is not confined, as it is today, to its visual appeal but extends to the process of creation, the inspirations behind the design, the message it conveys, the way it resonates, the hands that crafted it, and other aspects that become apparent only when one looks beyond the obvious. Brands that invest more in telling these stories, I believe, will provide consumers with a chance to connect on a more personal level, fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty that transcends mere trends.
By focusing on the art and story of a garment, contrary to what some may think, I believe that amidst the sea of promotions that dominate today's market (most of which, in my opinion, are superficial), brands can not only differentiate themselves in a crowded market but also create meaningful connections that lead to the formation of a community of people who share similar values. Brands following this path become more than mere sellers of fashion; they become curators of an experience, inviting consumers to be part of a larger narrative.
The power of these meaningful connections also contributes to a collective effort to reshape the industry’s narrative and redefine the horizons of fashion. Consumers become advocates for a shift towards authenticity, demanding more from the brands they support and, in turn, influencing the direction of the industry. While many believe that the industry is driven by the big players, it is the "small" ones who have the power to redefine it, change its direction, and reshape its “culture”.
Reclaiming the narrative is not just a personal desire but a necessity for the industry. It’s time to transcend the surface, move beyond dazzling promotional campaigns, and truly appreciate the art and story embedded in each garment. Let's reignite the significance of art in fashion.
What makes this initiative empowering is that the power to redefine the horizons of fashion rests in the hands of both consumers and creators. I urge the support of brands prioritizing art and story, resisting the pull of mindless consumption fueled by social media ( mostly ). By doing so, we collectively contribute to a more sustainable, meaningful, and authentic future for fashion.
The narrative of fashion is a story waiting to unfold, one that has been temporarily shelved and unread due to the issues discussed in this piece. Now is the time to grant it the attention it truly deserves. Fashion transcends mere fabric; it is who we are and we are fashion. What does this mean? The answer begins with the story and art encapsulated in each garment, guiding us toward a profound personal experience.
It’s time to make art matter again.
Paul Point

Paul, the EDM poet – this is how he describes himself, and let me tell you, he is not wrong at all. It was only recently, in November-December of last year, that I connected with Paul, and I am grateful for that moment. In Paul, I discovered not only a talented producer but also a kind and empathic person. This understanding developed through a few private interactions we had on Twitter, where the simple and often overlooked gestures revealed these qualities about Paul.
At the end of 2023, Paul released "Gotta (VIP)," a track taken from the forthcoming EP scheduled for 2024. According to Paul, this expedited VIP lounge mix is a rare and personal snapshot taken raw from the studio. What I love about it are the chill vibes it offers. I could close my eyes and let my mind embark on its journey while playing this track in the background. It is a great piece, one that kickstarted Paul’s journey in the new music world fostered by NFTs. I invite you to give this track a listen, for it is worth it, and being the first of his many releases, making it your own may mean something in a few years... Just sayin’.
I also encourage you to follow Paul’s journey on social platforms. He is super friendly, dedicated to his craft, and committed to making a living out of his dream. By following him, you may not only make a good "digital friend" at some point but also be inspired by his passion and dedication to the work he does!
Meri

It was only recently that I connected with Meri on Twitter, probably at the beginning of this year. Amidst the flood of bots that frequently follow on the platform, when a new profile followed me, I initially assumed it was another bot, given the recent trend. However, something about her account stood out. From her profile picture, I sensed a unique energy and decided to delve deeper. Upon exploring her profile, I felt an instant urge to reciprocate the following. In Meri, I discovered an artist, a painter who, in my opinion, doesn't wield a brush but paints with her mind and heart. She skillfully blends the two, transforming them into a brush that breathes life and color not only onto canvas but also into our lives.
One aspect of Meri's art that captivates me is how she leverages the symbiotic relationship between words and art. In this dynamic, words provide context to the artist's thoughts and emotions through art, while art, in turn, gives context to thoughts. It's a beautiful interplay, and I find Meri to exemplify it wonderfully. What's remarkable is that she doesn't need an abundance of words to achieve this. Often using just a title for her piece and one or more short phrases, she manages to completely alter the depth of a creation.
Meri is undoubtedly an artist worth watching. In my view, with her brush and canvas, she stands among the most talented individuals I've encountered on my journey. I encourage you to follow her artistic journey, as I believe her star is poised to ascend higher. Her voice and art deserve to resonate louder. I also invite you to immerse yourself in the worlds she creates with each of her creations.
Thank you for reading!
Have a fantastic day!
