Seeing Beyond Ourselves🌹
In today's interconnected world, marked by rapid technological advancements and a relentless pursuit of social prestige, we often fall into the trap of viewing everything solely through the lens of our personal experiences and beliefs. While this focus on individual perception has been beneficial throughout history, stepping outside of ourselves and embracing others’ perspectives has the potential to transform our lives in profoundly positive ways. Shifting from mere perception to a broa...

Today, I want to reflect on an aspect of our lives that often feels like a burden, though I believe that with a shift in perspective, we might discover its enriching nature. It’s an element that every one of us possesses, one that we could never truly erase. This is something we often try to hide, fix, or even obsess over in the quiet corners of our minds. Society has conditioned us to see it as a flaw, whispering that to be loved, respected, and accepted, we must work tirelessly to scrub it ...

What you are about to read represents the first part of an exploration I have wanted to undertake for a while now. This is the first chapter, not because there is a second one coming in the next few weeks with more things to share, but because this reflects my current level of understanding about the two elements I am about to present today. As I am on a journey of constantly enriching my knowledge and understanding, the second part will follow in the future, with more details and a better perspective on the period we are experiencing right now.
The element I want to address is the similarity between the dawn of the Renaissance in the 14th century—a period of rebirth that swept through Europe, forever changing the course of human history—and the era we are experiencing now, which I call the “Modern Renaissance”, driven by the relentless march of technology and the boundless potential of human creativity.
It’s the late 1300s in the bustling streets of Florence. Artisans and merchants hurry about their business, while in the workshops of masters like Brunelleschi and Donatello, a revolution in art and architecture is taking shape. The air and the emotions it emanates signal the transformation that the world is on the verge of. Fast forward to the present day, and you may feel the same energy. The difference is that you don’t have to be in a specific place to feel it. You can be anywhere. The technological advancements of today bring about a palpable sense of excitement, with boundaries being pushed and conventions challenged anywhere.
The Renaissance, which literally means “rebirth”, was a period of intense cultural, artistic, political, and economic revival following the Middle Ages. It began in Italy in the late 14th century and lasted until the late 16th century, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. This era was characterized by a renewed interest in the classical learning of ancient Greece and Rome, an increased desire to learn and explore, and a shift towards humanism in philosophy.
Today, as I mentioned earlier, I feel we are experiencing a similar period of transition and renewal. The rapid advancement of technology and the evolving dynamics of social interactions are reshaping our world in ways that echo the transformative power of the Renaissance. Initially, it was hard for me to believe that we would go through another defining period for humanity. However, I can't help but think about how our lives are being transformed by current revolutions and the many parallels between the 21st and the 14th century.
Our journey begins with the revolution of information—the way knowledge is spread. In the 15th century, the printing press revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge. Today, we have the internet, a vast web of information at our fingertips. The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 ( 1436 is the most frequent date that appears in different tomes ) led to an explosion in the production and distribution of books. This made knowledge more accessible to a wider audience, challenging the monopoly on learning long held by religious institutions and the elite.
Similarly, the internet has democratized access to information on an unprecedented scale. Anyone, from anywhere, with a connection can access a wealth of knowledge in a matter of seconds—something unimaginable a few decades ago. This democratization of information has led to new forms of learning and collaboration, much like how the printing press facilitated the spread of Renaissance ideas across Europe.
However, the internet goes beyond just facilitating quicker access to information. It also provides easier access to global online communities, whether found on social media platforms or other digital realms. During the Renaissance, the “Republic of Letters” emerged ( although it gained prominence a little after the period in the 17th and 18th centuries ). This was a network of scholars and intellectuals who corresponded across Europe, sharing ideas and debating philosophy, science, and art.
But what would all this information and technological advancement be without art which has played an essential role in our evolution since the dawn of time?
During the Renaissance, people witnessed a significant shift in artistic expression. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael pushed the boundaries of what was possible in painting and sculpture. They developed new techniques such as linear perspective, sfumato, and chiaroscuro, allowing for more realistic and emotionally powerful depictions of the world.
In today's age, elements like digital art, computer-generated imagery (CGI), or virtual reality are pushing the boundaries of creative expression. For instance, the development of 3D modeling and animation software has transformed the film industry, enabling the creation of immersive worlds and characters that blur the line between reality and imagination. This echoes how Renaissance artists used techniques like perspective and sfumato to create more lifelike and emotionally engaging artworks.
Additionally, in the Renaissance era, wealthy patrons commissioned and collected artworks, supporting artists and driving innovation. Art was seen as a luxury, reserved for the wealthy, both collectors and creators. Ordinary artists found it hard to make a living and enter the world of art. Living the life of an art was more challenging than living the art of life.
Today, however, we have NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). NFTs democratize access to the art world for both creators and collectors. Anyone, from anywhere, regardless of their status, can now collect, showcase, or sell works of art. They have created a new market for both digital and physical art.
Furthermore, we have AI-generated art, a controversial topic that challenges our notions of creativity and authorship. However, a similar situation occurred during the Renaissance. In the workshops of that time, multiple artists would contribute to a single work under the direction of a master. Today, AI art generators like Midjourney are collaborative tools that blend human creativity with machine learning algorithms, challenging our understanding of artistic creation.
Yet, how could artists express more about the world they inhabit if they don’t truly know it?
To ensure that every corner of the world was known, Renaissance explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Fernando ( Ferdinand ) Magellan set out to chart unknown territories. Their voyages expanded European knowledge of the world and initiated global trade networks that shaped the course of history. Profound, right?
Today, we may not be exploring the physical borders of our world but rather new frontiers in the digital realm. We are exploring the boundaries of virtual and augmented reality. These technologies, together with AI and others, are creating new spaces for social interaction, commerce, and artistic expression, much like the discovery of the New World opened up new possibilities for Renaissance Europe.
Furthermore, we have the metaverse, which to me is the ultimate expression of this digital exploration. A shared, 3D virtual space linked into a virtual universe, the metaverse may create new realms for human interaction and creativity, much like the discovery of the Americas opened up new worlds to Renaissance explorers.
With the way information is spread, art is created, and the world is known, our worldviews have changed as well. The Renaissance challenged long-held beliefs about the nature of the world and humanity’s place in it. The heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus and later championed by Galileo fundamentally altered how people understood the universe and their place within it.
Today, we are experiencing similarly profound shifts in our worldview. AI is forcing us to reconsider what it means to be human. The integration of mobile devices into our lives changes the way we interact with the world and one another.
The rise of social media and online communities has reshaped and continues to do so, our understanding of identity and social interaction, much like the growth of cities and the emergence of new social classes during the Renaissance. We now have digital native cultures and influencers who shape trends and opinions in ways that parallel the cultural influencers of the Renaissance period.
What happens when some of the most crucial areas of our lives—areas that impact each of us whether we want them to or not—experience change? They impact another essential one: the economy.
The rise of banking families like the Medici in Florence facilitated international trade and investment. New financial instruments were developed such as double-entry bookkeeping ( this system involves recording each financial transaction in two accounts—a debit in one account and a credit in another—to provide a more accurate and balanced view of a business's financial position and is crucial for modern accounting practices. ) that allowed for more complex business operations. The Renaissance brought significant changes to economic systems and practices.
Today, DeFi (decentralized finance) and cryptocurrencies, which have the blockchain at their root, are challenging traditional banking systems, much like the Medici and other banking families challenged the economic status quo of their time.
The pandemic accelerated the reshaping of our understanding of employment and the nature of work, leading to a shift towards remote work. This mirrors how the Renaissance saw a transition from feudal economic systems to more mercantile and capitalist structures.
Additionally, the rise of the creator economy today, where individuals can monetize their skills and interests directly through platforms like Patreon or YouTube echoes how Renaissance artists and artisans gained more independence from traditional patronage systems.
But, as there is always a “but”, despite the many benefits the Renaissance era brought to humanity and those offered by our current era, there are also challenges and concerns.
The Renaissance was a time of great social upheaval, religious conflict, and political intrigue. Similarly, our modern renaissance raises important questions about privacy, the focus of power in the hands of tech giants, and the potential for technology to deepen social inequalities.
The spread of misinformation online parallels the religious and ideological conflicts of the Renaissance period. Just as the printing press facilitated the rapid dissemination of ideas that challenged established power structures, leading to conflicts like the Protestant Reformation, social media and online platforms today can spread both information and misinformation at unprecedented speeds, resulting in social and political polarization.
There are also concerns about the impact of technology on mental health and social cohesion. While the constant connectivity enabled by smartphones and social media offers many benefits, it also brings challenges related to attention spans, privacy, and the quality of human interactions ( the lack of genuine human connection saddens me deeply ). This echoes how the social changes brought about by urbanization and the rise of individualism during the Renaissance led to new social challenges…
And with this being said, we’ve reached the end of our journey through the world of the old and modern Renaissance…
The reason I love exploring this topic and examining the past from time to time is that I believe remembering the lessons of history can positively impact the present state of humanity. The Renaissance was a period of innovation that built upon the past to create something entirely new. This is one of its greatest lessons. Our task today is not merely to apply new technologies to old problems but to reimagine our world in light of the possibilities they present.
Just as the Renaissance laid the foundations for the modern world, the changes we're experiencing today will shape the world of tomorrow. By understanding the parallels with the past, we can better navigate the complexities of the present and help steer our society toward a future that harnesses the best of human potential.
But, in the end, the future, like a Renaissance masterpiece, is ours to create.
Interconnected
While it's true that we enter and leave this world alone, the journey in between is filled with relationships and interactions. We encounter countless individuals who shape our experiences, teach us lessons, and contribute to our growth.
Think about the friends who support us, the family who loves us, the strangers who show us kindness. These connections are the essence of life.
While we shouldn't let others' negative opinions harm us, we also shouldn't completely disregard them. Life is not just about "I"—it's about "us." We are all part of the same narrative. Some of us come and go sooner or later than others, but our lives inevitably intersect.
Imagine if we all chose to be more understanding, kinder, and more empathetic. If we looked beyond our own needs and considered the collective good, we could create a more harmonious world. It’s about us, not just about them.
We are…
