In today's interconnected world, marked by rapid technological advancements and a relentless pursuit of social prestige, we often fall into the trap of viewing everything solely through the lens of our personal experiences and beliefs. While this focus on individual perception has been beneficial throughout history, stepping outside of ourselves and embracing others’ perspectives has the potential to transform our lives in profoundly positive ways. If the echo of criticism was loud in the past, I believe that in this digital age, when we are technically more connected than ever, the echo of criticism is even louder than before. We receive at least a negative reaction for every comment, image, video, or other thing we put on social media... "You aren't good at this," "You shouldn't do this or that," and the list could go on and on. These were once isolated to personal interactions, but now they reverberate over the wide expanse of social media, reflecting the omnipresence of cancel culture. (I'm not saying these harsh comments didn't exist in the past, but I believe you weren't confronted with them at every second of your day, or you were able to handle them differently). What I despise most about cancel culture is how it has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives, altering how we perceive and interact with the world and one another.
While this is not a new concept, "Cancel Culture" gained unprecedented traction in the age of social media, where, as previously stated, we became more connected than ever, spent more time, interacted more, seen more, and done more. With all these actions, envy, wickedness, and other negative emotions stem within people's minds. Dita Von Teese’s note poignantly captures the inevitability of criticism in our current climate: “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” I genuinely believe that the digital world's anonymity (to some extent) and vast reach have created a breeding ground for judgment and criticism, where even the tiniest actions can provoke a flood of negative feedback.
I think that most people would think that this culture primarily affects celebrities or public figures (or as we call them "influencers"), but I believe it spreads far beyond them. Ordinary people find themselves at the mercy of this scrutiny, leading to a heightened sense of vulnerability and a loss of personal identity. This fear of being canceled can lead to "self-censorship," where people are afraid to express their genuine thoughts and feelings, putting a damper on creativity and originality. This trend is particularly alarming in a world where diversity of thought and expression is more crucial than ever.
Anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of self-worth are only three of the effects of cancel culture. Its psychological impact is profound, especially on the younger generations who grew up primarily in a digital environment. They find themselves in a world where every move is observed and critiqued, often harshly, creating an environment of continual self-doubt and dread. This scrutiny often overshadows the pursuit of personal passions and authenticity.
But do we really want to live in a society where such a harsh culture rules? I surely do not, and neither should our loved ones or future generations. Therefore, I firmly believe there's a way to navigate these perilous waters.
The first step is to recognize that, while criticism might be painful, it does not define our worth. We must learn to absorb it without losing our sense of self. This art of resilience, once mastered, can serve as a beacon of hope for us and those around us. Responding to negativity with kindness and empathy, rather than anger or defensiveness, not only disarms the critic but also establishes a precedent for healthier, more compassionate interactions.
However, the most crucial step, I believe, in dealing with cancel culture is to seize control of our narrative. It's about deeply understanding our values, beliefs, and the unique qualities that define us. Standing firm in our identity, regardless of external judgments, is key. This approach has been my way of navigating through negativity, but remember, everyone has their path. As long as it promotes growth and healing, I believe it is a powerful tool in our arsenal.
Unity plays a critical role in combating cancel culture. By building a strong support system of friends, family, or communities that share and understand our values, we create a safety net. Such a network, rooted in embracing our true selves, provides a buffer against the harshness of criticism. It's in these connections that we find the strength to remain authentic and true to ourselves.
Embracing these scenarios, I believe, creates a barrier between us and the toxic world of cancel culture. It is through these actions that we can truly reclaim control of our narrative, paving the way for a more peaceful and authentic existence.
And it's not only about our individual narratives but also about the collective ones. I believe that each of our voices has the power to shape the society in which we live. In a world dominated by harsh words and quick judgments, the strength and resilience found in kindness and understanding are more important than ever.
We find the seeds of a more compassionate society in small acts of empathy, in the decision to listen and understand rather than judge. This journey is less about combating cancel culture and more about creating a community where diverse voices and stories are valued, not just heard. It's about creating a society where dialogue flourishes, and different perspectives are explored with respect and curiosity.
As we journey through life, let's remember that our words and actions have the power to influence and inspire. This responsibility is not a burden, but a privilege, an opportunity to make a positive impact in the world. True change is often brought about by the smallest actions, which we may dismiss as insignificant.
In this spirit, let's strive to leave behind a legacy of understanding, a social footprint that speaks of tolerance and acceptance. It's not just about canceling the cancel; it's about enriching our collective story, one word, one action, one moment at a time.
And so, if there's one more thing I'd like to add, it would be this: be kind. In kindness, we find the true strength to change the world.
In a world where you can be anything, be kind. After all, it’s what truly matters.
The prevalence of cancel culture today deeply concerns me, especially regarding the future of the younger generations. Although I find myself less affected by it each day, choosing not to dwell on others' opinions about me, my worries lie with my sisters. They are growing up in a world vastly different from mine, and I witness the impact of this culture on them daily.
This article is intended as a wake-up call for each of us. It's time to recognize and embrace who we are, to build a barrier between ourselves and this culture. We have the opportunity to lead by example and to spread the kindness and empathy that are crucial in fostering a world more receptive to the beauty of diversity.
If not for yourself, consider acting for the sake of your younger siblings, your children, your cousins, and future generations. Our actions today can set the foundation for a more inclusive and understanding world.
Change doesn't always have to come from monumental efforts. Sometimes, the most significant shifts are driven by those small, consistent acts of kindness and understanding. Let us be the change we wish to see, for ourselves and for those who follow.
Thank you!🌹
Nick

2023 has been a remarkable journey of meeting incredibly kind, wise, and talented people, and Nick Reyes stands out among them. I first spoke with Nick in March, and after an engaging one-hour call that effortlessly turned into two, I was deeply inspired by his vision.
Nick is the creative force behind VOC ("Victim of Circumstance"), a unique fashion brand that beautifully melds physical and digital elements, what we might call "phygital" fashion (or perhaps we can find a new term for "phygital" - am I the only one who hates it?). His brand's philosophy has a strong resonance in today's world, particularly in the context of cancel culture. VOC champions the idea of “embracing who you are, your creative interests, and your struggles; rather than becoming a victim to them.” It's a message that encourages resilience and self-acceptance.
Nick's creativity extends into the realms of digital fashion, particularly for metaverses like Decentraland and social media platforms like Instagram. His latest foray into 3D art has resulted in some truly mesmerizing creations that not only captivate visually but also weave into the narrative of his brand's philosophy. You can discover one of his inspirations in this short exchange of thoughts that I had with him.
Nick's kindness, clear vision, and creative endeavors are not just impressive but impactful. He's a talented artist who has the potential to make a significant impact in both the physical and digital worlds. Keep an eye on him; this will not be the last time you hear about Nick Reyes!
Mari

If most of the souls I’ve tried to spotlight in this section come from the “X” world, Mari emerges from a newer realm, particularly known in the Web3 space as Lens. I had the privilege of joining Lens at the beginning of this year, and it was there I connected with Mari. Despite being a part of this ecosystem for a while, it's only been in the past few months that I've started to spend more time there, discovering more about Mari's work.
Mari is a digital illustrator, a globe-trotter deeply immersed in the Web3 space, which is vividly reflected in her art and interactions. Her unique talent lies in storytelling through digital illustration. This storytelling ability is not just evident in her final pieces but also in the BTS videos she frequently shares.
Even though she doesn’t consider herself an artist, Mari is more than that; she's a pioneer shaping a future where her voice is not only heard but also valued. Her collaborative spirit and active engagement in the community are set to nurture a better future, not just for herself but collectively.
To follow not just a talented artist but also a kind and empathic soul, you can find Mari in the “garden” or on the more “old-fashioned” Twitter (X). Also, while she hasn’t released anything for sale yet, I’ve found a place you might be familiar with that acts as a gallery for her beautiful creations!
Thank you for reading!
Have a blessed day!
