If you were to ask me which things are ubiquitous parts of our daily lives, my answer would definitely include Fashion. It is something we cannot live without. We need and look for something to wear every time we venture outside. The beauty of fashion is that we all participate in it, one way or another, be it consciously curating our looks or simply reaching out for that comfortable T-shirt or pair of sneakers.
Yet, in our routine of buying, wearing, and admiring garments, how often do we pause to ponder – why do we buy what we buy? Why do we wear what we wear? Why do we admire what we admire? Most of us, I believe, rarely if ever, ask these questions. Yet, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, these questions seem to be more pertinent than ever.
Initially emerging as a communication tool, social media quickly evolved into an ever-evolving mood board, shaping our tastes and nudging our desires. As we scroll through the glamorous feeds of influencers and celebrities, we often find ourselves absorbed in the spectacle, seduced by trends, and caught in an endless cycle of consumption. But why? Why are we so obsessed with owning certain garments or so infatuated with a particular trend or style?
The answer to all of these questions lies within fashion's essence.
If technology gave birth to the fashion we know today (Tailoring shaped the fashion landscape by providing precise fits and bespoke designs, and at its heart lies the prowess of technology, with instruments like the loom heralding the start of this sartorial revolution.) yet distanced us from its core, it will be technology again that will reawaken the essence, making us perceive and appreciate fashion through a fresh frame of mind. We are now on the verge of yet another technological revolution, the advent of Web 3.0. We are also witnessing a resurgence in the understanding and appreciation of what fashion truly is.
Could this revolution enable us to peel back the layers and look beyond the surface of garments to unravel the true essence of fashion? It's time to find out!

Before we delve into how Web 3 can revitalize the essence of fashion, let's first define what that essence is. Think about fashion as a massive canvas that is often narrowed to mere splashes of clothing. But fashion is more than that; it's a vibrant palette of expression, a medium for showing the world who we are.
Imagine yourself standing in front of your mirror, getting ready for the day. You reach out for an outfit, convinced that you are only dressing in a simple garment. But, in fact, you are donning a statement, a statement about who you are, your values, your aspirations, or any other narrative that you want to share with the world, consciously or not. These may appear to be lofty ideas, but let us ground them by putting ourselves in the shoes of three distinct types of fashion consumers.
First, consider a friend who consistently puts on a new outfit for every gathering (I’m sure we all have one), a chameleon of styles and colors. While social media may influence their behavior, their constant change of looks stems from the essence of fashion. Clothing serves as a kaleidoscope of self-expression for them. Each time they step out, they display a different color of their personality. For them, the thrill of wearing something new is a journey of self-discovery, a testament to fashion's transformative power.
Next, consider a group of young people (I'm sure each of you has this type of person in your country) who are willing to stand in queue for hours, if not days, just to get a T-shirt similar to the one worn by their favorite artist. Judgments are often quick to follow in response to these actions, but when we pause and dig deeper, we uncover "the why" behind their actions. Through their actions, they seek alignment with the values, lifestyles, and identities embodied by their favorite artists. Their hunt for a mere piece of clothing is fueled by a strong sense of belonging and a desire to share cultural narratives. It's more than just a T-shirt for them; it's about being a part of something bigger than themselves.
Finally, let's look at a category that you may be familiar with (I'm sure you have this type of friend as well). Consider someone who is nonchalant about what they are wearing. Their choices might seem simple, even indifferent, but it is in this subtlety that the essence of fashion lives. They may not follow trends or labels, but this is a statement in and of itself. Their character and individuality are defined by more than their outward appearance. By refusing to conform, they showcase a rare authenticity and self-assurance. They put forward their personal values and comfort over external validation. Their choices, even if they appear to be simple and disregard fashion, paint a picture of their priorities and beliefs.
Regardless of the group one identifies with, fashion's essence remains consistent: it's about connection and self-expression. When we dress, we are like knights, our clothes are not just garments but shields. Fashion becomes our chosen armor, a visible testament to our identity, a reflection of our very essence*.*
The essence of fashion is a narrative woven into the fabric of our clothing, a story just waiting to be told.
With the advent of Web 3, these stories will become louder, more vibrant, and more influential. So let's turn the corner and see what the next chapter holds, shall we?
In our minds, identity is usually thought of as purely physical, a legacy from the dawn of humanity. Yet, in today's hyper-connected world, our identities have evolved to transcend the physical realm, flourishing in the digital and virtual spheres. Consider how much time we spend connected to digital devices versus engaging with the physical world. It's clear to me that things have changed. This shift also influences how we express our identities. Earlier, we needed to express ourselves only physically; now, we must do so digitally and virtually as well. Together, these three identities form a triumvirate of expression, each playing a unique role in our self-representation.
Our physical identity, being tangible and visibly tied to our biological selves, has its distinct importance. However, with the advent of the digital age, our digital and virtual identities have gained and will continue to gain increased prominence. Boundaries dissolve here, giving us unprecedented freedom to create, transform, and express. In light of the infinite potential of these realms, narratives play a larger role in differentiating one digital or virtual persona from another.
This is where Web 3 enters the picture.
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) represent something different to people: a scam to some, a quick cash opportunity for others, and the future to a select few. For the fashion industry, which falls into the latter category, NFTs are proving disruptive, transforming its fundamental dynamics. The most significant change they bring about is a shift in relationships: from transactional to relational.
By selling NFTs, brands give a voice to people in their journey. NFTs make co-creation possible, which will make consumers actively shape the brand’s future and culture. I agree that they influence the brand today as well, but are they truly rewarded for the things they do? Now, they will. They will receive a variety of rewards based on a brand’s offerings (usually, these things differ from one brand to another).
Through co-creation, people will have a better understanding of how the creative process works. They will change their narrative from “I bought this garment from X” to “I co-created with, and bought this garment from X”, solidifying a stronger bond with the brand. Moreover, this shift will also make the essence of fashion shine.
By being more engaged in the creative process, people will get to connect more with the brand and understand the narratives that exist behind each piece. Every discussion about the garment will begin with the story of how it was made, the meaning behind specific details they added, and so on.
The narratives will change. The emphasis will change. The essence of fashion will be highlighted once more.

Digital fashion, in this vein, emerges as a potent medium for self-expression, allowing users to sport unique, often fantastical, virtual outfits that speak volumes about their virtual identities. Digital fashion will be essential in emphasizing the essence of fashion. People can truly be who they want to be in the digital world, given the limitless freedom for creation and donning. The differences between the myriad of garments, as well as the choice of which one is the greatest (as well as choosing one over the other), will be influenced by the story of each. People will go to great lengths to create clothing that represents them. Each piece will carry a tale about the wearer's preferences, ideals, and aspirations. Whether they find themselves in a sculpture, a painting, or anything else, they can wear it. The potential for donning and expressing is endless.
In the digital fashion world, it will be the garment's story that sparks conversations, not the garment itself. We won't say, “How beautiful the graphic is!” but rather, “What does this shape represent?” or “Why are you wearing a sculpture?”. These are questions that can only spark conversations about what lies beneath the surface. Digital fashion is an exciting space, and it is poised to return fashion's essence to where it belongs: in the spotlight, thanks to its limitless nature of expression.
Nonetheless, I believe that the majority of digital pieces will be sold as NFTs. How can we express ourselves if we don't own the pieces through which we choose to express ourselves?
With the advent of these technologies came the birth of what is now known as “phygital” garments (I hope a new term is coined soon because it is among the worst portmanteaus ever created). Despite my aversion to the term, these "phygital" pieces of clothing excite me because they blur the lines between the physical and digital, transforming fashion narratives into immersive experiences. This type of product will allow people to see the story that exists beyond the garment.
Consider a physical garment, let’s say a T-shirt, with a graphic that is related to music. Physically, only the graphic is visible. However, through AR technology and the integration of digital fashion and NFTs, people can own, wear, and display a digital counterpart as well, which, in our case, is the T-shirt. Instead of just a "simple" garment, the whole piece comes to life. The T-shirt appears to be made of staves. The graphic begins to move, creating new shapes and movements that add dynamism to the garment. Indeed, you can imagine and imbue the garment with anything you wish.
What do you think these things will bring about? Which of the T-shirts do you think will be shared on social media? Yes, the latter. Why?
All because it is a story about self-expression. Such a garment transforms a simple T-shirt into a dynamic experience. The digital counterpart of the garment stirs up a range of emotions and makes the wearer see and engage with fashion in a new light.
NFTs, Digital Fashion, and "Phygitals" are three things that will make people realize that clothing is much more than a simple piece of fabric. But there is one more tech that will emphasize this idea, probably faster than any of the three while remaining strongly connected to them: NFC technology ( Near Field Communication ). NFC tags will be placed on clothing, and anyone with a phone will be able to access the goods that exist within its realm by simply tapping it.
For instance, 9dcc, a Web 3 native luxury fashion brand, embedded NFC tags with POAPs (Proof of Attendance Protocols, akin to digital stamps), which could be shared between individuals. The concept was to allow people to connect through clothing. See? The garment takes on new meaning through the simple distribution of digital stamps.
Even though fashion has historically been one of the most effective tools for connecting and sparking conversation, it will become more visible as a result of these simple, yet powerful integrations. There will be stories about people who met or even fell in love as a result of a POAP distributed through a garment. The garment will become an instant part of their story. This will alter how they perceive and engage with fashion, making them appreciate it for what it truly is; for its essence.
The concept of digital stamp distribution is just one example of what can be done. In fact, almost every item, especially "phygital" garments, will include an NFC tag which will serve as a bridge between the physical and digital worlds. We are still in the early stages of this evolution. The potential of NFC tags is vast, further highlighting the misconception of narrowing fashion down to mere garments.
The future of fashion is being driven by NFTs, digital fashion, "phygital" garments, and NFC technology. They emphasize the notion that clothing is much more than just a piece of fabric. These technologies highlight the essence of fashion and show us how interconnected these elements are. They hint at a future where fashion extends beyond jackets and T-shirts. It is about stories, connections, and identities waiting to unfold in the physical, digital, and virtual realms.
In a world increasingly driven by digital and virtual identities, fashion finds itself at a fascinating crossroads. As we excitedly navigate the frontier of this new age, marked by emerging fields such as NFTs, digital fashion, NFC technology, and concepts like 'phygital' garments, we are poised to witness a profound shift in our perception of fashion. It will transition from being merely a garment and a transactional commodity to becoming a story, a relational commodity.
Furthermore, as the fashion world becomes more intertwined with blockchain technology, the timeless essence of fashion is reawakened. Because of this technological advancement, fashion's future lies in its past, where garments were not just pieces of fabric but expressions of our identities.
This evolution of fashion represents more than just a change in our wardrobes; it signals a change in our stories, a revolution in our relationships, and a rebirth of our essence. For in the end, we will realize that we're not just wearing fashion; we're living it, breathing it, and becoming it.
We are fashion.

Nik Cosmo

Nik isn't just a phenomenal musician with a captivating voice; he stands out as an extraordinary human being. With a heart that radiates humility and kindness, those privileged enough to call him a friend find themselves in good company.
Nik is now passionately bridging the gap between musicians (occasionally fans) and technology. He organizes daily spaces that address a variety of topics, all with the aim of elevating artists within the Music NFT space.
Nik is your go-to guide if the future of the music industry captivates you. And keep your eyes peeled, because he may be revealing something groundbreaking soon.
More than that, I invite you to visit his YouTube channel and lose yourself in his lovely music. "Rollercoaster" is my top pick. The type of song that, no matter when you listen to it, will always bring you that positive energy and vibes that only music can bestow (I don't actually believe there is a word for it; in this case, experiencing it speaks louder than words could).
Let me know which one is your favorite!

Today, I want to reflect on an aspect of our lives that often feels like a burden, though I believe that with a shift in perspective, we might discover its enriching nature. Society has conditioned us to see it as a flaw, whispering that to be loved, respected, and accepted, we must work tirelessly to scrub it ...
