2921 The Belt
Daedalus led his mind to discover flight to escape prison. Icarus, his son, was led by his emotions, and fell to death.
Humanity strained past Earth’s gravity and learned falling but never landing.
When we’re falling forward, just ahead of doom, we embrace it as floating.
We’re flying in orbit.
Jakey Tagore was almost born doing low-G gymnastics and tumbles, helping his Dad and brothers, delight the laborers and migrants riding cheap slowships between Jupiter and Mars. The System’s famous “Tagore and Sons” live! The hours were long on the slowships, and Dad would have to nudge him.
In his sleep Jakey was tumbling and floating, “Jakey wakey, Jakey wakey! Hey Wake up Jake! Alert, Alert, Alert...”
Dad’s voice changed into an intervoice.
“Alert, Alert, orientation lock negative. Alert, alert....” Jakey was no longer a boy. He was a man roused conscious by his deep-suit. He was tumbling and falling - in trouble.
This was not a show on a slowship transporting workers.
This was trespassing inside a massive deepship, hewn from an asteroid, heated and hollowed up, kilometers and kilometers long. The deep-ship was also tumbling but in the wrong way. Jake was in a long free fall towards one end of a gigantic cylinder.
Years of gymnastic hustling and nanite drugs kept him from throwing up so far.
“Al! Help, where are you?? Get me the hell out of here!””Relax nephew, we’re trying to lock the axis, you got time.””Al!””Hang on, getting things fixed, “lights” coming on.”Jacob Tagore willed himself back to flight training.
“Pretend it’s a Halo jump, Jacob. We’re almost set.”
“Estimated time to impact...” Jacob ignored his suit.
