Almost everyone agrees on the need for a new Internet. However, this need is nothing more than a drive for improvement. There are no shortcuts. The false prophets who come to shield us from hoaxes can end up dismantling one of the pillars of democracy—freedom of speech. Meanwhile, the new gods of technology should not set themselves up as its guarantors by taking minimal or no action, all while their platforms profit from pernicious incentives.
