Roger Federer retired from tennis in 2022 and went to attend college. He graduated from college at Dartmouth in 2024 (he left school at 16). These are three takeaways from his commencement address during graduation.
Effortless is a myth. "You rarely break a sweat", "You make it look easy". It was only made easy because he worked very hard. Roger got to beat his opponents "effortlessly" by outworking his opponents. Believe in yourself has to be EARNED. Most of the time it's not about having a gift (talent), its having a grit. Having decipline, trusting yourself, embracing/loving the process is also a talent. This is how to make victory look effortless.
It's just a point. In 2008, he was competing in one of the biggest tennis match in history and he himself was trying to make history by being champion 6 times in a row. However, he got defeated. He would never have another shot of winning 6 in a row and lost no.1 ranking. Even after a great defeat he still continued to work hard each day. "whatever game you play in life, sometimes you are gonna lose a point/match/season/job, it's a rollercoaster and its natural when you are down to doubt yourself and feel sorry for yourself. But negative energy is bad energy. The best are not the best because they win every point, it's because they know they lose again and again and learn how to deal with it. work harder, work smarter"
Life is bigger than the court. Even when he was playing tennis competitively, he never forgotten his roots - a life of travel, culture, friendship and family. Outside of tennis he created a foundation in South Africa to give education to children because he believed in order for them to fulfill greater things, they need education. "Contribute your energy to a mission that is larger than yourself."
Leaving a familiar world behind and finding a new one is incredibly, deeply and wonderfully exciting.
