Reuters, April 21 - the world travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) said on Thursday that the global travel and tourism industry is expected to return to its pre epidemic level in 2023, and its growth rate will exceed the growth rate of global GDP.
WTTC released a report during the meeting held in Manila, Philippines, saying that from 2022 to 2032, the annual average growth rate of the global travel and tourism industry is expected to reach 5.8%, while the global GDP growth rate is 2.7%, and 126 million new jobs will be created.
In 2019, tourism accounted for 1/10 of the world’s GDP and employment, but COVID-19 reduced the value of the industry worth 9 trillion and 600 billion US dollars by half, and made 62 million unemployed. The report predicts that the number of jobs in the global tourism industry will increase to 300 million in 2022, only about 33 million fewer than the level in 2019.
The report also predicts that the tourism industry in the Asia Pacific region will rebound significantly and create nearly 77 million new jobs in the decade from 2022 to 2032. The industry’s contribution to GDP is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 8.5%, more than twice the 4% growth rate of the region’s overall economy.
