In 1923, W.I. Thomas (sociology dude) coined this phrase with the idea that in society (and as individuals) we apply and have terms and labels applied to us and others. His concern is that negative labels can restrict growth or hinder the community.
Because enough people think there are conspiracies then it becomes a feedback loop/echo chamber that is self-reinforcing
The same goes for those who do not believe there are conspiracies
When enough people believe that something is true, it becomes the truth for them and their perception of other aspects of reality in relation to that truth will then be shaped to fit that form of truth.
