We were joined on our first episode of MOVE IT with some fantastic artists: @Leopardslunch_ , @everfreshdesign , @LionYoungArt and @jardinesage .
In this article I hope to pull in only the important points for people starting out or are already into animation. The first episode was unfortunately not recorded (because I am not great with technology sometimes) but the future episodes will be!

In animation it would be great to experiment and find the type of animation that interests you. It can be stop animation, 3d animation, 2d digital animation - whatever suits YOU.
3D computer animation
Traditional animation
2D Vector-based animation
Stop motion
Motion graphics
Thanks to the benefit of technology, many animators have completely custom and different workflows that work according to their skill level and expertise in certain areas as well as stylistic preference. You might use 3d reference for camera motion, pure 2d to make it completely free and experimental, or a variety of different techniques to use reference that might help to make artwork be that more “real” .

Lion Young uses a very unique workflow often experimenting in After Effects combined with frame by frame animation style for certain effects of specific animations. You can find out more about the process at their instagram page. This artist brings along unique storytelling, music as well as art into a cohesive project which is very interesting to see and experience.
Everfresh's workflow is a unique combination of 3d animation with overpainted frame -by-frame animation to give more of a 2d feel. Some elements are completely 2d, like liquid shapes and morph transitions. The characters are mostly 3D animated with bendy and squash and stretch mechanics that he built into his custom c4d toon rig preset, which allows for a very stylized animation style. Sometimes for things like hair and skirts for instance the characters are rendered out bald and/or naked and those elements are then animated frame by frame on top of it. This allows for a convincing 2D look while utilizing the benefits of 3D animation techniques.
Jardine is an animation veteran in my humble opinion. Most of the animators that I mention have a lot of experience in all different methods of animation. Their current workflow might inspire you to experiment. Jardine currently often works using Callipeg, Toon Boom Animation and even Procreate. It is a frame by frame process some would consider tedious, but many meditative. There is a unique result from all the effort magnified in their pieces which stand the test of time.
Additional animation artists in the space our guests wanted to feature and you should DEFINITELY check out include: @jeremy_pires , @yo_superdope ,@DUAJISIN, @dstern_motion, @MotionMarkus, @pipouz01, @adnerwbell, @lewis_osb, @stephenonguk, @TabasiHadi, @ryan_talbot_, @shapiro500, @TonyBabel, @Daxterpiece, @ericlefaure
All of us hold a unified belief that there are underlying rules to animation. Whether you go 3d, 2d or stop motion or something completely unique, the basic principles of animation should guide you. All of these programs are just tools and levers for pushing and pulling to get the result we want to get. As Jardine says “keyframes are keyframes and you understand them no matter what software you are using” and I agree with that.
Learn the basics first then you can pick and choose a software or a style you really want to hone in on.

We hope the first space gave some positive insights into animation. These series are aimed to make animation less scary and more fun. Please do give it a try. If you are still having trouble about certain aspects of 2d animation you can always try to reach me in the DMs. A lot more cool content to come!
