I opened my first Reddit account and could not post for weeks. I asked people who said they knew Reddit and none of them could give me a real answer. The account ended up suspended and I forgot I even had it. That failure taught me two things. One, Reddit watches you closely. Two, if you do this right you can build a real presence that lasts.
This guide is everything I learned. Setup, profile, hunting karma, subreddits, posting rules and how awards turn into cash. Read it, follow it and your Reddit life will be easier.
Use a VPN when downloading the Reddit app and signing up. Pick a location like US, UK or Australia. You want a clean feed, fewer geo restrictions and fewer weird flags on your new account.
Sign up with email, Google or Apple. Anything works.
Pick an age above 20. It prevents verification issues. If you plan to verify later, use the same age as your ID.
Use the same name as your Twitter handle if you want brand consistency
Avoid extra symbols or emojis
If your name is taken, add simple numbers
Keep it clean and searchable
Matching username and display name is ideal.
Reddit will ask for interests. Choose only the ones you actually want in your feed. For Web3, pick: Web3, DeFi, crypto, NFTs, gaming and trading. Search manually for any missing ones.
This shapes your entire homepage.
Do not write:
“NFT marketer”
“Community builder”
“KOL”
“DM for collabs”
Telegram or Twitter links
Any token or project names
Write something simple and human. Keep it honest, not promotional.
Use a clear picture. If you want brand consistency you can reuse your Twitter PFP. Set a clean banner as well.
1 upvote gives you +1 karma
1 downvote removes 1 karma
Upvoting others does not affect your own karma
Removing your upvote does not reduce your karma
Many subreddits require minimum karma to post, so you need to build it early.
Good places:
r/AskReddit
r/NoStupidQuestions
r/CasualConversation
Animal or wholesome communities
How to hunt:
Drop 3 to 5 comments a day in AskReddit-style subs
Post short questions or stories that invite replies
Mirror the writing style of top posts
If a comment gets downvoted, delete it quickly.
Some block accounts younger than one month
Some require a specific karma level
Some require flairs
Some need a body text attached
Some only allow questions, not stories
If you cannot post yet, leave the subreddit and return when your account is stronger.
Do not add links in early posts
Do not promote anything
Do not beg for karma or awards
Do not post yes or no questions
Do not put marketing words in your bio
If AutoMod removes your post, read the explanation and adjust.
No emojis in titles
Use a clear question or statement
If the post button is grey, check if you need a flair
Some subreddits require a body, others do not
Always look at the hints Reddit gives you.
Do not post more than 1 to 2 posts a day
Focus on comments
Build karma slowly and consistently
Awards can convert to real money. The minimum withdrawal is 10 dollars. The withdrawal goes to your Stripe account, set up the same way as Twitter payouts.
If you want to advertise or promote anything, wait until your account is at least 2 to 3 months old. People can easily check account age. Older accounts are trusted more.
Read subreddit rules
Check flair
Remove emojis from titles
Avoid links
Avoid yes or no questions
Delete downvoted comments quickly
Keep first week posts at 1 to 2 per day
Make 3 to 5 comments daily for karma
This is the exact method I used to avoid getting suspended again. Once you understand Reddit, it becomes fun. You can earn karma, awards, followers and real conversations. Follow the system and enjoy your Reddit journey.
