Building great products is hard. Building a strong community is even harder. When we first started exploring the idea of creating a user-friendly wallet for Polkadot and Kusama we knew that we wanted it to be a community-first project, where individuals could participate in a meaningful way and be rewarded for their contributions. In the traditional world, many tech startups will focus heavily on product development and overlook the need to build a community until after they have a product in the market.
At Talisman we believe that cultivating an active and engaged community from day one is the best way to scale a web3 business and bootstrap a loyal user base. It allows us to create a more intimate relationship with our users and leverage their unique knowledge and perspectives so we can build better products faster.

Mayor of the DAO Friends with Benefits, Alex Zhang, believes that “Community and culture is gardening not architecture” and we tend to agree. Much like gardens, communities require careful planning, some key ingredients, and lots of nurturing.
The social spaces you prepare are like garden beds full of rich soil which set up opportunities for serendipitous interactions and conversations. At Talisman we use Discord as our main forum for discussion and providing updates to our community. We’ve curated various channels into sections that help provide some structure and make it easier to navigate for new members.
Plants get their energy from the sun but communities get their energy from contributors so it’s important to create a wide range of opportunities for individuals to collaborate and create value. By creating teams and roles that specialise in certain areas (like helping onboard new users or translating marketing materials) we’ve been able to discover individuals who add a lot of value to the community and reward them for their contributions.
Gardens also require a diverse array of plants (or in our case individuals) that compliment each other and create a symbiotic relationship as the community grows. Ensuring we have a wide variety of perspectives and skillsets allows us to think critically about what we are building and in turn create better products.

The tools we use to tend our garden are changing rapidly over time and as DAO tooling improves in DotSama we expect to leverage many interoperable pieces of infrastructure in the coming years but we have also found the need to repurpose existing tools to create better experiences for our community. One example of this is the Collab.Land bot.
Collab.Land allows users who hold a certain amount of tokens or NFTs to link their wallet via a Discord bot and unlock private channels. This is a popular practice amongst DAOs and NFT projects in Ethereum and gives users access to exclusive spaces where they can meet likeminded people and socialise. Think of it like a secret club where you flash your membership card at the door you’re instantly teleported inside.
We wanted to create a unique space in our Discord for members of the Spirit Clan (our early Alpha testers) where they could hang out, get access to special events, and test new features. To join the Spirit Clan you must first get a Spirit Key, a series of limited edition NFTs which were rewarded to Talisman Crowdloan participants and given away at our weekly community calls.
If you’re thinking of setting up Collab.Land for your own community Discord it’s pretty simple.
A Discord server
A special role you’d like to token-gate with Collab.Land
Private channels set up for members with that special role
A RMRK NFT collection to use as your access token
Click here to add Collab.Land to your server
Choose the server you’d like to add Collab.Land to

3. Add Collab.Land as an administrator

Please Note: Make sure that the Collab.Land role is above any of the roles you want to token-gate in Discord server settings
A new channel called #collabland-config will be automatically added to your channel list. This is where you will set up the roles
Type !setup role into the #collabland-config channel and click the 👍 emoji

3. Choose the Kusama network by clicking the K emoji

4. Click the 🤑 emoji to choose the RMRK token standard

5. Type in your RMRK collection address followed by the minimum number of tokens required, the maximum number required and then the Discord role you’d like to token-gate
Eg. b6e98494bff52d3b1e-SPIRIT 1 -1 @Spirit Clan

6. That’s it! You’ve added the token-gated role and now your community can connect their wallets and access the private channels you set up.

Once you’ve added a token-gated role users can connect their wallets in the #collabland-join channel
Click the Let’s go! button to get started

3. The Collab.Land bot will message you with a link. Click the Connect Wallet button

4. Choose Talisman from the list of supported options

5. Click Talisman Wallet and connect the account which holds your RMRK NFT

6. Confirm the account you’d like to use and approve the request with your Talisman wallet

7. You’re done! Close the browser tab and go back to Discord

8. If you’ve done everything right you should see a message like the one below listing the role you’ve been granted
