"Paradoxically, an object whose image is very widely spread is a rare object, in the sense that few objects have their images spread widely. This can be exploited to create value in art objects that are not in the traditional sense rare and singular. The future of collecting may be less in owning the thing that nobody else has, and more in owning the thing that everybody else has." - McKenzie Wark
We are currently in an era of art where value is defined by its spreadability. Moreover, crypto has long firmly existed in the realm of the aspirational economy, where consumer behavior is influenced by aspirations for a certain lifestyle, status, or identity. From fashion, music, furniture, food, and lifestyles, today’s creative class today is responsible for directing consumer’s attention and money toward aspirational things, places, and ideas.
In this workshop I'll discuss different types of token communities forming on Farcaster whose digital representations are meant to spread widely and function within the machinations of the aspirational economy -- from "connoisseurs" creating an ideal, to the "superfans" and "selective buyers" that perpetuate the form, and finally the "skimmers" that might just buy a token. Channels like /degen, /higher, /747air, and /enjoy are already succeeding in attracting all four types of aspirational economy participants.

In a 10 minute lightning talk, I'll introduce these concepts with other examples in media, art, and luxury goods.
Once we all share an understanding of the terms, I'll invite attendees to split into groups in order to create a taxonomy of these creative class currencies with the following prompts:
What are the primitives that enable these new types of token collectives, (also called, "DAOs 2.0," art projects, self-contained token economies, scenecoins, and more)?
What platform physics introduced by the Farcaster protocol to enable a more unified experience for communities to form around a shared ideal or meme?
What features could be improved in a client? (native currency tipping, embedded swapping Frames, social signal from followers you trust)
How does this change our view of DAOs and onchain communities?
Is there a reproducible playbook for token-based communities on Farcaster?

I humbly present my submission for a workshop during Farcon. I'll discuss different types of token communities forming on Farcaster whose digital representations are meant to spread widely and function within the aspirational economy, followed by a workshop. https://paragraph.xyz/@jamesbeck.eth/farcon-submission-2024

Well now I wish I was going. Was having a similar discussion in journodao the other day. So much to unpack here.
