Listening to Miles Davis’ Someday My Prince Will Come; Coltrane and Mobley blowing away as Cobb keeps the tempo, Kelly keys away and Chambers grounds the proceedings plucking at the bass.
Music - from Jazz to Hip Hop - has been a faithful partner to my typing and scribbling. Not only as an accompaniment, but also as a catalyst to clear my headspace and properly articulate what I feel as I am feeling.
But besides music, there are other elements I have begun noticing, that aid and enable my writing flow and process - or do the opposite. For instance, writing first thing in the morning is sometimes easier than at the end of the day - especially after I have journaled with pen & paper.
Also, resisting the initial expression of thoughts i.e. judging them to be unimportant or poor quality - delays my ‘starting to write’ and usually require me to remember what I initially didn’t want to write and capture it. Writing freely without initial judgement helps create content to refine and release.
Perhaps a writing schedule and routine are exactly what’s needed for a consistent writing flow which minimizes distractions and hurdles. Perhaps.
Album finished … and writing too.
