Why do we train?
I have a friend in law enforcement. His why is crystalline in strength and clarity.
He trains to stay alive. There are people in the world who would kill him if they could, and he is determined to go home to his girl and his family.

How does he train?
I can answer this tactically.
Every day, he trains a skill that will keep him alive. Some days, it’s swimming. Others, it’s shooting. And three to four times a week, it’s Jiu Jitsu.
How does he train?
I can answer this thematically.
He trains with laser-like focus. When he wrestles up from a bad position, every fiber of his being moves with resolute determination. He trains as if he is wrestling for his life. He toes the line between calmness and full-on fight-or-flight.
He toes the line so that he knows where the line is, so that he’s comfortable when he has to cross it.
Many of us are fortunate to not have such high-stakes professions. But we can learn something from my friend.
