This was when the COVID-19 Pandemic was in full force; health protocols required everyone to stay inside their home. These protocols then lost people their jobs and livelihood. 

This caused a huge interest in other ways to earn through online means. Online selling, jobs, and live streaming became a big thing, and then came the discovery of P2E games, specifically Axie Infinity. There was a lot of interest in them because play-to-earn was an entirely new concept to the people. 

There was one problem, though, to start earning in Axie Infinity, you had to have a team of 3 Axies. The common people of the Philippines had already lost their livelihood. They were struggling, so investing in a game was something they could not afford. The problem then caused an idea for people with Axie teams to start loaning their teams to other people, letting them earn while getting a percentage. This then coined the term, Axie Scholarship.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also indirectly influenced content creation and increased demand for more content since more people were on the internet. This niche interest in P2E games then grew as more local live streamers in the country started making content for Axie Infinity and even starting their own scholarship programs.

I’ve been through two scholarships, and comparing them both was night and day. This was around a year ago when I didn’t do my research on scholarship programs and was just a kid trying to get some money. I became a scholar for a manager I’ve found in Filipino Axie Infinity groups and had the worst 2 months of my life.

The manager had a list of percentage splits for the earnings. The list had 3 options for me to choose from: 

1. 10:90 split that goes up to 40% in the next 3 months

2. 15:85 split that goes up to 35% in the next 3 months

3. 20:80 split that goes up to 30% in the next 3 months

Being the naive kid, I chose the first option, thinking I wanted to commit to it for 3 months. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but after a while, I started regretting it. The stress of having to maintain a good MMR and having a daily requirement for SLP was getting to me, which pretty much forced me to leave.

Feeling defeated, I started looking for other programs and found Earn Alliance’s scholarship program through a friend. I applied immediately, seeing that it was a 50:50 split with better conditions. I started grinding daily, enjoying the game more and earning some actual money. 

After a few months, I became busier with schoolwork and had less time for myself and even less for Axie. This led to me becoming inactive and eventually being kicked out of the scholarship. Despite all that, I think Axie Scholarships are really cool. It helped me earn some extra pocket money for school fees, and funded my gaming addiction(which I’m not proud of).

It was also fun because me and my friends who were in the same scholarship had coaching sessions of our own, we had those moments of just cheering after wins, and just arguing about certain stuff. I’m very grateful for Axie Scholarships, not only for those who gave me the chance, but also those who gave chances to other people.
