Monad is a layer-1 blockchain project compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), capable of scaling up to 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) through parallel execution. Founded in early 2022 by Keone (CEO) and James (CTO), both former members of Jump Crypto with experience in high-frequency trading (HFT) and contributions to Solana, Monad aims to create a high-performance blockchain.
During Q4 2023, the "Fast Chain" narrative emerged, focusing on blockchains with high transaction speeds and throughput, distinct from Ethereum. Solana led this trend, followed by chains like Sui, Sei, and Aptos. Solana’s Sealevel engine supports parallel execution, but Monad offers this in an EVM-compatible environment using optimistic parallel execution. With its founders' strong backgrounds, investors anticipate Monad could rival Solana, with its devnet already reaching 10,000 TPS.
Monad stands out for its full EVM compatibility, unlike other fast chains except Sei V2. This compatibility offers a strong network effect and access to the large EVM developer community, as noted by Monad's CEO, Keone.
To build its community, Monad utilizes memes, such as the purple pepe, making it easier for users to connect and spread its image rather than focusing solely on technical aspects. Currently in its devnet phase, users contribute through educational content or memes, gaining roles in Monad’s Discord based on their contributions. Some early contributors received significant rewards during the Wormhole airdrop.
As of May 2024, Monad is in its testnet phase with plans to launch its mainnet in Q4 2024. The ecosystem has already attracted over 80 projects, with 70% from the DeFi sector. Monad’s high TPS benefits decentralized limit order book (DLOB) models, with prominent players like Balancer, PancakeSwap, and Primex Finance in decentralized exchanges, and Elixir and Swaap Finance in liquidity provision. Other projects include Timeswap in lending and ZOTH in real-world assets.
