With an entire ecosystem of NFTs in a genre that has never been seen in the blockchain gaming space, Tiny Colony is looking to make big moves in the P2E sphere. Let’s go deep down into the nitty-gritty of the project to see if the game is worth digging into.
** **
Tiny Colony is built on the Solana blockchain and uses 2 coins; Teenybits (TEENY) - the in-game utility token earned from running an effective and efficient colony and Tinybits (TINY) - which is the governance token used in DAO and other in-game functionality (like breeding and minting) and rewards. Tiny Colony brings the exciting and casual construction and management simulation game genre to the crypto space which is now getting overcrowded with strategy fighting games.
** **
The gameplay is modeled closely to prominent games in its genre notably Fallout Shelter and Oxygen not Included where players build their underground bases (in this case, an advanced ant colony) and make it grow by using the resources they have as efficiently as possible. In Tiny Colony you start in a bunker and work you’re way down the earth while building and collecting resources to help keep your colony running and growing. You have to manage your units to dig, create more units, defend, and research to keep on improving the colony of your humanoid ant army.
It may be a casual game in essence, but its gameplay spans further from its base-building and management. There are multiple game modes Tiny Colony offers to players which include:
** **
Gladiator Arena - a PVP mode where players battle out their Legendary or Mythical NFT. The winner gets rewarded with $Teeny, $Tiny, and NFTs in the game while the losing player loses some of its NFT’s experience points. Other players can spectate the fights and place bets on their chosen gladiators.
Battle Arena (PvP and PvE) - Players battle with their squads of 5 of their NFT characters either with a computer or other players.
Tiny Wars - Players form alliances and clans to participate in this community-wide event. This event also has the biggest amount of rewards in the entire game.
Tiny Slots - Players participate in mini-games for a chance to earn TEENY. Players also have a chance of winning a rare NFT in this game mode.
Tiny Theatre - For a small fee of TEENYBits, players can watch animated short films based on the history of Tinyverse. A storyline concept the team uses to expand the game.
** **
As mentioned above, there are many NFTs in the game. It’s almost as if every item in the game can be classified as NFTs. Although the team markets the game as a free-to-play; play-to-earn game, Players can purchase these NFTs to maximize their experience in the game and I think this is a smart decision since people who want to leverage their game by using NFT characters and colonies can do so and profit more from it while also helping people who want to start playing the game without spending anything.
With that said, I think as long as players know how to manage their colonies and make them run as efficiently as possible, they can max their earnings even if they are using free accounts to play. So there is still skill and critical thinking involved in the game and it doesn’t feel like pay-to-win as much. What I’d like to see in the game though is how free-to-play players stand to people who invested in their colonies if they ever get to attack players that don’t have NFTs. This also applies to the Tiny Wars mode where I see having allies who have strong colonies with NFT characters will be beneficial (or maybe downright, needed). Questions that will be answered upon its eventual release on June 30th when they will have MVPs start trialing the game on its public beta.
In conclusion, I think that Tiny Colony will be a great game for someone interested in casual gaming in the blockchain. Gameplay will also be hard to be stale because of the multiple game modes I listed above making it a dynamic game to be experienced. I can also see big guilds having multiple people under their wing being successful in this game because they can coordinate attacks against other alliances (because a colony of ants is stronger when they work together). I am also looking forward to the other projects on the Tinyverse since they seem to really like developing the world-building of their game and I am looking forward to the various community events that will be held inside their metaverse. The potential for this game is humungous despite being an ant-inspired game. We might not see it yet but Tiny Colony may make giant waves in the crypto gaming space.
