Life and work

Cesário Verde (1855/1886). Born within the mercantile bourgeoisie, he began to distinguish himself among the protagonists of cultural life by never abandoning social integration and professional activity in his environment of origin, nor exchanging references to his sociocultural extraction for the behavioral patterns of literati.

In a mixture of pride and regret, he attended but abandoned the Literature course, experiencing an almost institutional disenchantment with literary life; and after a brief life in which this peripheral relationship with the literary field conditioned the communicational development of his poetic discourse, the work – unpublished or dispersed at the time of his death and posthumously published in the famous text “O Livro de Cesário Verde”, organized by his friend dear Silva Pinto.

With a naturalist/realist bent, Cesário Verde's lyrical speech is divided between the city and the countryside, presenting a dichotomous poetry of the shared poet (as, later, Fernando Pessoa would do with the creation of Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos). He is, in fact, considered a precursor of modernity, of Pessoa and his heteronyms. The originality and prospective nature of her poetic work already enabled her to build bridges even further, in the 19th century. XX inside; hence the influence it exerts on much of contemporary Portuguese poetry.
