Life and work
David Mourão-Ferreira was born in Lisbon on February 24, 1927 and died in the same city on June 16, 1996. Son of David Ferreira, collaborator of Seara Nova and secretary of the director of the National Library, Jaime Cortesão. He attended the Colégio Moderno and graduated in 1951, from the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon, in Romance Philology.

Marked influences on his poetry are the presencistas (he lives daily with José Régio in Portalegre, where David Mourão-Ferreira went to do military service) and French authors such as Paul Valery and Proust. He published his first poems in Seara Nova and joined MUD Juvenil, a resistance movement to the Salazar dictatorship. In 1950, he published his first book of poetry Secreta Viagem.
A multifaceted author, he also writes theater – he even takes to the stage as an actor, literary critic, fiction and fado for Amália Rodrigues. He was also a professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon and had extensive collaboration in journalism. He served as Secretary of State for culture, directed the Revista colloquio/Letras and was Director of the Itinerant Libraries Service at Calouste Gulbenkian. He passed away in 1996.
