Life and work

Diogo Bernardes (1530-1605) was born in Ponte da Barca. He was King D. Sebastião's chamber boy, having accompanied him to Alcácer-Quibir, where he was taken prisoner. Known as the Poet of Lima, he was a lyric poet, standing out above all in bucolic-inspired poetry. His work is collected in three volumes: Rimas Various ao Bom Jesus (1594), O Lima, admittedly his great bucolic work and Rimas Various-Flores do Lima, which brings together the main part of his loving lyricism (1596).

Poetic reading
From the various studies carried out on the life and work of Diogo Bernardes, the sculptor chose the one that would allow her to represent what remains in all of his poetry through fabulous confirmations. You can feel his great solitude, you can guess the transformation he makes of reality affectively and with such simple intimacy... The sources, the rivers, the waves that our eyes are already poetry, condense into an elongated surface, all surrounded by the air and the atmosphere itself, in simple and open forms. One can guess the spirituality of some verses that will be tenderly engraved in the bronze.
