Life and work
Carlos Drumond de Andrade – Brazil (1902/1987). Brazilian poet and chronicler was born in Itabira – Minas Gerais, and died in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil. Descendant of a rural family, he became a bureaucrat and devoted himself to literature. He accepted modernism of which he became one of the greatest figures.
A poet who is often sarcastic, ironic, full of humor, he disguises a pure and profound lyricism, an enormous human sympathy and a constant and acute concern with the meaning of life and man. He has a horror of feeling and the pathetic, but he has clarity of feeling and an acute sense of the tragic that he communicates with great discretion and finesse. Some of his poems are among the best in the Portuguese language. As a chronicler, he comments on events with irony and grace, always revealing his concern with the authentic, with the essential things of man. He regularly contributed to the Rio newspapers Correio da Manhã and Jornal do Brasil.
