Life and work
Eugénio de Andrade was born under José Fontinhas Rato, on January 19, 1923, in Póvoa de Atalaia, a village in Beira Baixa near Fundão, where he spent his childhood. Later he moved to Castelo Branco with his hand and then to Lisbon. Coimbra would also be a city that would leave an indelible mark.
He received influence, among others, from António Botto, Fernando Pessoa and Camilo Pessanha. He lives very closely with other poets such as Mário Cesariny, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Jorge se Sena. He served as inspector of the Medical-Social Services, in Porto, until his retirement in 1983, but it is in writing, particularly poetry, that he stands out, with a unique work, translated into several languages. He passed away in this city, aged 82, on June 13, 2005.

Sculptural Reading
Sculpture
In white Estremoz marble. It has a rectangle at the base that symbolizes the book. On his right forearm the poet holds a cloth, the veil of the sacred and there are also plant elements that refer to the poet's own writing.

Poetic Reading
The sculptural elements refer to Mediterranean man, a Greek in the historical-philosophical sense. His poetry reflects this luminosity, the celebration of life, fruits, nudity.
Sculptor Francisco Simões
Patron PAPELACO, Society of Paper Representations and Office Machines, S.A.
