The Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena is a park and one of the great centers of culture in Oeiras. The area around this former armament factory stands out for its academic, scientific and artistic activities. A very inviting space with its exhibitions and leisure spaces.

Location
It is located approximately 1500m from Massamá-Barcarena Station.
Description
It can be considered that this factory would be divided into two factories separated by Ribeira de Barcarena: Fábrica de Baixo and Fábrica de Cima. The aforementioned stream was extremely important for the factory, as it was from it that the water needed for the work was extracted. Comprising several buildings spread over an extensive area, where we can find the Museu da Pólvora Negra, the Center for Archaeological Studies of Oeiras with several archaeological exhibitions, the Artistic Experimentation Center of the Portuguese Club of Arts and Ideas with an art gallery, the Municipal Nurseries, the Universidade Atlântica, and various leisure facilities such as restaurants, bars with live music, gardens and places prepared for outdoor shows. It hosts, among other events, the Sete Sois Sete Luas festival.

History
After Barcarena was elevated to reguengo, this armament factory was created. It operated between 1540 and 1940. It received the name Companhia de Pólvora e demolições de Barcarena in 1951, when its director Simon Armand Jonet (13.11.1902–29.01.1987).
The Municipality of Oeiras acquired the Fábrica da Pólvora in 1995. Currently, with the factory being deactivated, the site has been transformed into a center of culture. Inside, made up of several buildings scattered over an extensive area, we can find the Black Gunpowder Museum, an art gallery and some leisure facilities, such as a restaurant, bar with live music, gardens and places prepared for outdoor shows. Also in 2003/2005 its exteriors were used for the recordings of the youth series Morangos Com Açúcar (TVI), during the first three series. At Fábrica da Pólvora, the International Day of Museums and the Night of Museums were celebrated in 2007, with various shows and workshops from the 15th of May to the 20th of May 2007.
