Construction of the lighthouse began in 1855 and was completed in April 1857, with Ipácio Vielle already managing the lighthouses.
It came into operation in 1858, what would be the first lighthouse on Cape Mondego. A 2nd order Fresnel lenticular apparatus was fitted (it was one of the first to be fitted in our headlights), and the light was fixed white. The illuminating device was a mechanical lamp with food pumps using the Carcel system, running on oil.
Due to poor visibility of this lighthouse or due to interests related to the Empresa Exploradora de Minas, the lighthouse was eventually demolished and another one built further north.
It went into operation on November 20, 1922. The optical apparatus is of the 3rd order, large model (500mm focal length), with rotation produced by the watchmaking machine.
The light is white, producing groups of 4 flashes and its light source is the incandescence caused by oil vapor.
In 1941 it was electrified through generating sets, ending up being connected to the public distribution grid in 1947. The clockwork machine was replaced by electric motors.
The equipment and infrastructure have been modernized over the years, having been automated in 1988.
In 2000, an automaton was set up to execute the characteristic.
