It began by appearing in the General Plan for Lighting and Beaconing approved in 1883, with an estimated expenditure of 21,014$000 reais on its construction.
In 1891, Almeida de Ávila, in his report, was also of the opinion that a 3rd order lighthouse should be built at Ponta da Ferraria.

The Ferraria lighthouse was established on October 22, 1901. It is located on the westernmost tip of the island of S. Miguel. The tower is 18 meters high and 107 meters high. It was equipped with a lenticular apparatus, rotating catadioptric dioptric, 3rd order, large model (500mm focal length), the light source being a constant level lamp, later replaced by incandescence by petroleum vapour. The rotation of the optics was produced by the clockwork machine and the luminous range of the lighthouse was 26 miles.
The optical device was replaced in 1946 by another identical one but with different characteristics.
The lighthouse was electrified in 1957 with the installation of direct current generating sets. The light source became a 3000W lamp. The clockwork machine continued to rotate the optics.
In 1974 an electric motor was assembled to wind up the watchmaking machine. This system was the invention of the head of the lighthouse (Bettencourt Leça).
The lighthouse was eventually electrified with power from the public grid in 1988, operating with a 1000W 120V lamp and electric rotation motors.
It is automated with the DF model system.
