The General Plan for Illumination and Beaconing approved in 1883 contemplated a lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo, projecting the installation of a 2nd order optics, with three grouped beams with a luminous range of 25.5 miles in medium condition.
It was only in 1896 that studies were carried out on the site, with a view to implementing this project, carried out by the director engineer of Public Works in Funchal and by the captain of the same port.
The commission appointed in 1902 to study the modernization of the lighthouses contemplated in the General Plan approved in 1883, chaired by the hydrographer sea and war captain, Joaquim Patrício Ferreira and integrating the hydrographer captain of the frigate, Júlio Zeferino Schultz Xavier and 1st Lieutenant Francisco Aníbal Oliver, proposed the installation of a 3rd order apparatus, small model, from the Barbier house, whose price was 27,250 francs.

Only in 1911 would the lighthouse construction project be elaborated.
The Ponta do Pargo lighthouse came into operation on June 5, 1922. The tower is 14 meters high and 312 meters high. It was equipped, not with a 3rd order apparatus as it was designed, but with a 2nd order lenticular apparatus (700 mm focal length), the light source being a constant level petroleum lamp. The rotation of the optics was produced through the watchmaking machine. The land to build the road to the lighthouse was purchased that same year for the sum of 1500$00.
The constant-level lamp was replaced in 1937 by incandescent oil vapour.
The lighthouse was electrified in 1958 with the assembly of generating sets, with gas remaining as a reserve.
It was electrified with energy from the public network in 1989, and in the same year it was also automated with the DF model system.
In 1999, Resolution nº 95/99 of the Presidency of the Regional Government, declared the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse of cultural value in the Region, classifying it as of local value.
In 2001 a small museum center was created in the lighthouse.
