In the General Lighting Plan for the Coast of Portugal approved by decree on January 15, 1883, a lighthouse was designed at Cabo Carvoeiro in the Algarve.
In 1913, the first technical considerations about the Alfanzina lighthouse began, as well as the choice of the location for this purpose.
On December 18, 1915, the land for its construction was acquired.
It went into operation on December 1, 1920. The optical apparatus is of the 3rd order, a large model (500 mm focal length), whose rotation is produced by the watchmaking machine, and its light source is incandescence by oil vapor.
It was electrified through generating sets in 1950, starting to have an electric incandescence lamp as a light source.
In 1952 a house was built, making use of the existing oven house, a work that became urgent and indispensable since the families of two lighthouse keepers were living in the same house.
The road leading to the lighthouse was built in 1961.
On July 14, 1980, the lighthouse was connected to the public electricity grid, becoming automated in 1981.
On April 12, 2004 it was remodeled with the DF model system. It was equipped with a SATI 400V/Ac three-phase rotation motor, DF 2003 model changer with 3 Halo lamps. POWER 24V/12 A battery charger and Lister TS2 engine, 11KVa alternator.
