Dating back to 1879, the project for the Aveiro lighthouse was designed by engineer Paulo Benjamim Cabral. The work was first directed by engineer Silvério Pereira da Silva and later by engineer José Maria de Mello e Matos.
It came into operation in 1893, at which time a 1st order Fresnel lenticular apparatus was installed, producing groups of 4 lightning flashes.
The light source was incandescence by oil vapor and the optics rotation was done through a clockwork machine.

It has undergone several renovations over time, both in terms of infrastructure and in terms of energy and light source. The optical apparatus was replaced in 1947 by another identical one, but this one of the 3rd order, a small model (375mm focal length).
It was connected to the public power distribution network in 1950 and in 1958 an elevator was installed to access the tower.
In 1987 he was represented in a philatelic issue and in the Lighthouses of Portugal exhibition, inaugurated in the Belém Tower. A coin was minted at the time by the Directorate of Lighthouses.
In the December 1987 Bulletin of the International Maritime Signaling Association, it was given cover honors. It was automated in 1990.
