Life and work
Filinto Elísio (1734/1819). This was the Arcadian name by which the poet Francisco Manuel do Nascimento became known, who was born in Lisbon and died in Paris, after an absence from his homeland of almost four decades. In Paris, in 1798, “Os Versos” by Filinto Elísio would be published and, from 1817 to 1819, his “Obras Completas” (11 vols.), republished in Lisbon, from 1834 to 1840. Filinto represents, in our literary production, , the maintenance of the great neoclassical orientations, here and there touched by pre-romantic emotion. He maintained an intellectual and poetic dialogue with the future Marchioness of Alorna, for whom he had an extraordinary admiration, and to whom he gave the Arcadian name of Alcipe, which she later used. A great devotee of Horace, he cultivated the genres of the classical tradition, leaving us sonnets, madrigals, epigrams, stories, epistles, satires, odes (especially odes).
