Almost in the middle of Praia do Tamariz, formerly called Praia de Santo António, on some rocks not far above the waters of the sea, there was for centuries the Fort of Santo António, which defended this area from a possible landing, with the support of the Fort S. Roque, to the west and Forte da Cruz de Santo António da Assubida, to the east.

In 1646, once construction was complete, its command was handed over to Captain Francisco de Vilhegas, who had a corporal, three artillerymen and twelve soldiers, similar to the Fort of S. Roque. After a long period of abandonment and degradation, it was repaired in the context of the Roussillon War, c. 1793-94, as happened with the other forts in the region.
Although it was artillery in 1821, by 1886 it was already considered obsolete, so in 1889 the construction of the railway cut its rear defenses: trenches, walls and rifle lines.
In 1894 it was taken to public auction and sold to Ernesto Schröter, who would demolish it to build a summer residence with an architecture inspired by references from central Europe, which still constitutes one of Tamariz's landmarks.
