Vida e Obra
Gil Vicente (1465-1537) is considered the first great Portuguese playwright, as well as a poet.
He attended the royal courts of D. Manuel I and D. João III, benefiting from the protection of D. Leonor de Lencastre.
He composed and performed around fifty works of different nature and aesthetic scope, in Portuguese and Spanish.
His work marks the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and is endowed with a unique literary quality and a timeless character, common to great works of art.
He is still one of the most performed Portuguese playwrights today.
Leitura Escultórica
Escultura
É uma peça que se integra formalmente no espaço que lhe foi atribuído, um espaço em forma de folha, que sai de um grande tronco que vai estruturar todo o percurso principal do parque, de acordo com o projeto da autoria de Francisco caldeira Cabral.
Uma grande barca, também em forma de folha, assenta nesse espaço que lhe serve de base e de ancoradouro.
Essa grande barca divide-se ao meio transformando-se em duas proas, simétricas e orientadas em sentidos opostos. São as barcas que levam al almas para o Céu ou para o Inferno, simbolicamente identificado por um anjo e por um diabo.
Cada um transporta no seu bojo um carregamento de pecados e virtudes, simbolizados por cubos de pedra preta e cubos de pedra branca.
Os visitantes ao atravessarem as barcas encontra-se assim entre duas forças que sempre os acompanham ao longo das suas vidas.
A água, meio onde em princípio navegam as barcas, é sugerida na base da barca do Inferno, por uma ondulação construída em terra e relva.
Leitura Poética
Na construção da escultura optou-se pela representação escultórica da figura de Gil Vicente a partir dos Autos das Barcas nos quais reside a essência da sua obra. O Céu e o Inferno, o Anjo e o Diabo, A Virtude e o Pecado como símbolos do eterno conflito, estruturam assim a ideia da escultura que se propõe para o “retrato” de Gil Vicente no parque dos Poetas.
