Life and work
Junqueiro War (1850/1923). Freixo de Espada à Cinta was born into a family of farmers, traditionalists and very religious. He studied Theology and Law in Coimbra. He began publishing poetry at the age of 16, as a Theology student, expressing religious sensitivity and social concerns in compositions with an ultra-romantic taste.
While still a student, he shows political inclinations. He also collaborates on A Folha, by João Penha. He asserted himself with A morte de D. João (1874), an epic composition that achieved great success, impressing with its declamatory breath, the vehemence of its satire, its exaggerated lyricism, its accumulation of images and comparisons. In his time, Junqueiro fascinated and divided the public, mainly due to the pamphlet style and satire that characterize a significant part of his work. The then open debate about the real value of its production continued throughout the first half of the 20th century.
