The construction of this church began in 1560, next to the Cathedral. According to an inscription on the main portal, it ended in 1562, the year possibly related to the façade.

After the foundation of the Irmandade da Misericórdia in 1513, they received permission from Archbishop Diogo de Sousa to install the temple in one of the chapels of the cloisters of the Cathedral. It quickly became small, raising the possibility of the Brotherhood building one from scratch.
This is how it happened, construction having begun in 1560, next to the Cathedral. According to an inscription on the main portal, it ended in 1562, the year possibly related to the façade.
Improvements
In the following years, the interior suffered the consequences of improvements such as the construction of the various altarpieces, the painting of one of these and also the ceiling of the lower choir.
The 17th century turned out to be the period of transformation of the interior, within the scope of remodeling, decoration, restoration and expansion of its spaces.
The pillars and retables were repaired and painted in gold, the office building was built, the roof covering was repaired with the execution of coffers and the placement of tile panels.
At the end of the same century, the central altarpiece and the collateral ones were built. In the following century, the works carried out there were limited to small improvements such as the execution of new carved altarpieces.
Structure
The plan develops in an L, in the combination of the temple and Casa do Despacho, in which the church has a rectangular plan, and built in granite stonework.
Main facade
The main façade, which faces Rua do Souto, is topped by a triangular pediment in which the entrance serves as an altar-altarpiece.
The round arched portal is accessed by a staircase with eleven steps flanked by two columns on each side that frame images of Queen Santa Isabel on one side and São Luís on the other. The portal is surmounted by the coat of arms of Archbishop D. Gaspar de Bragança.
There follows a frieze decorated with medallions and crowned by shells between fireworks. It ends with two Corinthian columns, decorated with two pairs of medallion busts.
Side facade

The side façade, facing east, features two large round arched windows and a portal in a straight frame flanked by two composite columns. These support the entablature on cantilevers, crowned by an edicule framed by two composite columns.
The shed is topped by a double cornice and surmounted by zoomorphic motifs, housing two images representing Our Lady visiting her cousin Santa Isabel. These are flanked by other images of Saint Joseph and Saint Zacarias.
Inside
Inside, the nave is covered by a wooden vault decorated with coffers. The high choir in wood is highlighted in the center by the semi-circle with a wooden balustrade.
