The construction of this church was a bit troubled. The order for construction was given in 1590 - construction that should have ended six years later - but, due to the many changes, because the original plan passed, the church of S. Pedro was only completed in the 18th century.

The set of buildings of the mother church of São Pedro was born from a church with only one nave, three side chapels and two side altars.
Inside, the church is decorated with 17th-century tiles, which cover most of the walls, not only in the nave and chancel, but also in the sacristies. Paintings, jewelery and furniture from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are also an integral part of the overall decor.
This church has a very interesting detail, which could easily go unnoticed if not observed from the right place! Go up Calçada de Santa Clara and enjoy the magnificent work in colorful tiles on top of the church's tower.
