The center of Câmara de Lobos invites you to take a stroll attentive to the unique atmosphere of the city. It is a place rich in traditions, stories and, of course, a rich historical heritage. One of its most outstanding elements is the Church of São Sebastião, which already has six centuries of existence.
It was the year 1426 when, under the order of Infante D. Henrique, the then Chapel of São Sebastião was built, in honor of this saint. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the growth of the local population led to works being carried out in this temple. It proved necessary to remodel and expand the chapel, which thus became the current Church of São Sebastião.
This religious monument features a Baroque style. It has three naves and a main altar worked in gilded carving. In the chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento there is a panel of tiles from the 18th century, where the Agnus Dei is represented.

Outside, it is important to highlight the presence, in pebble stone, of the coat of arms of the family of João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered the island and who lived in this locality between 1420 and 1424. in honor of Saint Sebastian.
