The story goes that the current church stands on the site of a chapel that was built in the early years of the 16th century. According to Henrique Henriques de Noronha, its builder was the sesmeiro Manoel Affonso de Sanha, “squire of the Infante D. Fernando, Pay d'El Rey D. Manoel” who “resided in this part where he was given many lands in 1469 , whose third he became morgado in his descendants by the will with which he died on April 1, 1507”.

The chapel of Senhor Bom Jesus – an image of the height of a man, crucified – was “the center of a populated farm, forming the primitive nucleus of inhabitants that would constitute the future parish”, which would happen in 1577.
Accompanying the development of the place, elevated to parish in 1552, the original chapel underwent works throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, having become “one of the most beautiful temples in the North of the Island” having, according to Artur Sarmento, “paintings of value and the enduring work of carving that most stood out in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament”.
On July 12, 1908, a fire devoured the church, barely sparing “an image of the Lord Jesus, part of the sacristy with some vestments and parish archives”, as reported by Diário Popular, in its July 14 edition. of the vicar, Father Casimiro de Abreu, in 1910, the Church of Ponta Delgada is “solemnly sacred in 1919”.
