The main church of Oeiras, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Purificação, began to be built in 1702, having been inaugurated in 1744. (...) The construction of the current chancel, with the closure of the vault, was completed in August 1704.
Its existence is considered certain in the reign of D. Dinis, but from the then parish of Nossa Senhora da Purificação de Oeiras to the current main church, many centuries have elapsed.

The idea of proceeding with the construction of a temple that was significantly spacious for the needs of the parish was born and emerged over time, although it became difficult to execute, taking into account the enormous expense that it entailed. But the smallness of the former parish church was, in fact, manifest.
The person responsible for the architectural project was the famous royal architect João Antunes, at this stage already at the end of his career. The superintendent who completed the works was D. António Rebelo de Andrade, a man of very refined culture, who embodies the patron of the Baroque period. However, at the date of the consecration of this work, although the church was completely built, the paintings were still missing.
«A city without its old buildings is like a man without memory». Leandro Silva Teles
The interior of the Mother Church of Oeiras has some elements that stand out for their great beauty. This is the case of the baptismal font, the work of master Matias Duarte, with a foot of bastard stone and a body of limestone. The washbasin in the sacristy is another highlight. Work by the previous master, it presents a very happy combination of lioz stone (white) and red stone (reddish marble), being a set of rare perfection and beauty, also highlighting the pulpits, of perfection and impressive tracery. Special attention should also be paid to the paintings that adorn the Mother Church.
On the high altar there are four large paintings by Miguel António do Amaral. One of them represents the last supper; another, a scene from the Life of Jesus and another represents Magdalene.

Above the altars of the church, ten paintings depict important moments in the life of the Virgin. These are themes chosen by António Rebelo de Andrade, as well as the eight panels that also decorate these altars. At the top, above the transept, there is a central painting alluding to the patron saint of the church – Nossa Senhora da Purificação, belonging to the workshop of Jerónimo da Silva in Lisbon. The church also has a beautiful organ (in the choir).
