Colégio de Nossa Senhora da Graça is a non-profit institution, with more than fifty years at the service of teaching and education, located in the parish of Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the coast of the municipality of Odemira.
History
It was born from the will and visionary spirit of a priest, Joaquim Maria Lourenço, as one of the valences of the Bathing Colony of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, later called the Institute, with provisional authorization, on October 29, 1959, with only 7 boarding students. The definitive charter dates from March 21, 1962.
It was, therefore, one of the first educational offers in this municipality, even in the entire region south of the Tagus and, more specifically, in Baixo Alentejo, responding to the social and educational needs of a vast region.
The founder of this work held the position of Director until the early 1980s.
Initially, it functioned as a school exclusively for girls, on a boarding basis, opening its doors to external girls and, later, in October 1968, to boys, under a day school. In 1975, a boarding school system for boys was also created.
In 1981, it began offering Pre-School education, continuing to be one of the pioneers in the municipality of Odemira.
At the same time, the College became part of the Public Education Network, through the celebration of a partnership with the State, with the objective of responding to the needs of the Portuguese Educational System, resulting from the massification of education, post-April 25, 1974 .
This partnership materializes with the Association Contract, signed with the then Ministry of Education and Universities, in 1982, directed by João Fraústo da Silva, of the VIII Constitutional Government.
It was at this time that the Board of the College became a collegiate body, made up of three elements, the Pedagogical Director, the Deputy Director and the Secretary, structure which has persisted to this day.
In the early 90s, the College continued to expand its educational and training offer, with the implementation, in 1993, of secondary education of general and technological courses and also with the introduction of recurrent teaching, during the day, for basic education , and at night, for secondary education.
At the end of the 1990s, the College ceased to function as a boarding school. From the year 2000 onwards, the College began to have an exclusively lay Board, continuing to focus on the quality of infrastructure and equipment, on the academic and professional qualification of the teaching staff, as well as on its stability, with a view to the educational success of the community. That fits.
The achievement of PEDAGOGICAL AUTONOMY was one of the main objectives of the current Board, having been achieved in the academic year 2010/2011. The guidelines for this Department's action are based on the intensification of networking, through articulation with local, regional and national partners and on participatory pedagogical management, either with the creation of pedagogical bodies with intermediate decision-making, or with the encouragement the participation of Parents and Guardians and Students, through their representation on the Pedagogical Council.
Communication with the outside world has been constant, promoting the dissemination of information and transparency in educational activities.
