Jardim João Chagas is popularly known as Jardim da Cordoaria due to the activity that took place there for around 200 years.

It was in this place, known at the time as Cordoaria Nova, that the rope makers were located. This name has remained current and we still call it Jardim da Cordoaria today.

Before the cordoeiros, this garden was called “Campo do Olival” and the Cordoaria do Bispo was located here.
It was after this that this place began to be urbanized and Campo do Olival became Alameda dos Olivais. Fairs and markets were held here, such as the S. Miguel fair, which later moved to Boavista. Around 1865-66, a process of transforming the Alameda into a Garden began and the landscape architect Émile David, also known for his design of the Crystal Palace gardens, was responsible for the task.
After completion, Jardim da Cordoaria, characteristically a romantic garden, became more frequented by the city's bourgeoisie.
In 1941, a cyclone changed the appearance of this garden. Even so, this garden has always been considered important for the people of Porto and its citizens and in 2001 it was once again the subject of renovation.
Furthermore, the plane tree avenue found there has been considered, since 2005, to be of Public Interest.
A showcase of art and history As we have seen, the importance of this garden spans time. However, it is not only due to the history, but also to the art that we find there that this garden is so mythical and emblematic.
If we walk around Cordoaria we can find several statues, such as:
“A Flora”, by António Teixeira Lopes
The bust of the poet António Nobre, by Tomás Costa
A statue of Ramalho Ortigão, by Leopoldo Almeida (sculptor)
“The Thirteen Laughing at Each Other”, by Juan Muñoz from Madrid
“The Abduction of Ganímedes”, by António Fernandes de Sá
