The Palácio de Cristal Gardens are a pleasant green space located in the parish of Massarelos, in the city of Porto, Portugal, from which you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Douro River and the sea.

History These romantic gardens were designed in the 1860s by the German landscaper Émile David, to surround the then Crystal Palace, replaced by the Rosa Mota Pavilion in the 1950s.
Description The Gardens of Palácio de Cristal include the so-called Jardim Emílio David, which has beautiful specimens of rhododendrons, camellias, araucaria, ginkgo and beeches, as well as fountains and statues allegorical to the seasons.
Avenida das Tílias constitutes the most striking axis of this park and is flanked by the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library (where the Palace Gallery is located), the Concha Acústica and the Chapel of Carlos Alberto da Sardenha (built in 1849 by the princess of Montléart). Nearby there is a restaurant and a terrace overlooking the lake. On this avenue and in other places there are strategic viewpoints that provide panoramic views of the Douro River and the city. It is at the end of this avenue that we find the chapel that the Princess of Montléart had built in honor of her brother, King Charles Albert.
Thematic gardens are also represented, namely the Garden of Aromatic Plants, the Garden of Medicinals, the Garden of Twin Cities (opened in 2009) and also the Garden of Sentiments (opened in 2007), where the Dor statue by Teixeira Lopes is located. . Other pleasant spaces are the Bosque, Avenida dos Castanheiros-da-Índia and Jardim do Roseiral, which is enriched with significant elements of the city's artistic heritage. Seven magnificent specimens of California palm trees appear nearby.
Adjacent to the Palácio de Cristal Gardens are the Romantic Museum and the Port Wine Solar, both in Quinta da Macieirinha. Very close by is Quinta Tait, with gardens filled with collections of roses, camellias, princess earrings and a majestic Liriodendrum tulipifera that surround Casa Tait.
Destruction of the lake On June 23, 2009, a plan for the conversion of the Rosa Mota Pavilion was approved, which included the construction of a new building for business conferences in the area where the lake is located. This work was the target of protest, and a Movement for the Defense of the Palace Gardens was formed.
In 2013 the plan was abandoned.
