Life and work

José Anastácio da Cunha (1744/1787). In addition to being a poet, he was a great mathematician. He was the target of political persecution resulting from his sharp spirit and his interventionist poetry. The excellent scientific preparation in the field of Mathematics was combined with a literary activity of relevant significance in the evolution that will lead Portuguese poetry from Neoclassicism to Romanticism.

It is therefore understandable that a significant legacy of neoclassicism persists in his work, through the forms he preferred, whether the fixed forms of the sonnet, the hymn, the cantata, the idyll or the ode, or the strophic, metrical and rhymatic schemes, was the use of blank verse; through the use of classical mythology; or by the occurrence of themes and topics that, as they are impossible, the odi profanum vulgus or the aurea mediocritas, had characterized with remarkable insistence the poetry of previous eras.
