Life and work
José Craveirinha – Mozambique (1922/2003).
Mozambican poet was born and died in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). Son of a black mother and a white father, from the Algarve.

He spent his first years in a traditional Mozambican environment with his mother “in the midst of partying around the campfire”. Later, as a child, he will live with his father, making the cultural mix that structures his identity and poetics more vivid. His poems question the biographical record, in which the figure of the father gains importance, continuing an acculturative and fundamental theme in the universe of his poetry.

His poetic speech fits in with contemporary poetry from the colonial period and also with much poetry written in the last 17 years of the life of the new country that is Mozambique.
A poet committed to the country's destinies, the author, however, created a very unique and original speech, in which the modernity of the verse and images uncompromisingly corroborates the ideological meanings.
Thus, the Portuguese language is as if shaken in its syntactic-lexical structures, to innovatively carry with it the rhythms and energies of the Mozambican languages.
