Life and work
Manuel Carneiro de Sousa Bandeira – Brazil (1886/1968). Brazilian poet and prose writer was born in Recife, and died in Rio de Janeiro. Representative of modernism, his poetic writing highlights free verse and the abolition of any formal or thematic barriers.

Having found his definitive expression, he remained faithful to his vocation, although always showing a restless, Faustian spirit, open to everything.

Many consider him the greatest poet of Brazilian modernism, and he is certainly one of the greatest in national literature. Fundamentally lyrical, he has a very acute sensitivity, especially towards life.

Illness was his companion and his muse, as was death. He sought the “eternal feminine” in always unsatisfied loves. Gifted with extraordinary versatility, he successfully tried all types of rhythm and all techniques, even experimenting with “concrete poetry”. It constitutes a rare example of fidelity to poetry.
