In recent times, anyone passing by 10C on Avenida Combatentes da Grande Guerra, in Algés, came across an unusual scene. The historic seafood restaurant and brewery Relento, which since 1961 had won over those who passed by with its fresh seafood — displayed for enjoyment in the large fishpond at the entrance —, steaks and succulent steaks, was closed.

The closure, however, was never intended to be permanent, which is why employees continued to receive their salaries, explains José Tomé, managing partner. “Health problems forced me to leave the restaurant, which ended up making it impossible to keep it open. But we always wanted to go back”, he explains.

The return actually happened this Thursday, October 6, 2022, and it couldn't have gone better. “We worked all day. We serve good lunches and good dinners. There was even a problem with the telephone network in the area, so we were unable to receive calls, which prevented us from receiving reservations, but people showed up anyway, because they heard about it or passed by. We hadn’t announced it.”

The customers' reaction did not surprise Tomé. “It is a house with a lot of history and a loyal clientele, who were eager for us to open. First the grandparents came, then the children and now the grandchildren arrive.”
Both in the menu and in the space, nothing has changed — they just returned to pre-pandemic capacity, that is, they are able to receive 120 people. “We don’t feel the need to change, because it’s what we serve that has won over everyone who comes here. Therefore, in addition to seafood, we keep the usual steaks and preguinhos”, he concludes.

The space became the property of Carlos and Tomé's families, around 30 years ago, when the former employees decided to buy it. Currently, the son of the second, José Tomé, and the widow and heir daughters of the first, who died at the beginning of 2021, make up the company at the head of Relento.
