Transmontano is a traditional restaurant, one of those with typical dishes, tables with paper tablecloths, dark wooden chairs, and a display case with desserts. Everything we are used to in this type of restaurant. What's different here has a lot to do with Mr. Zé Luís, the owner, who welcomes us when we arrive. Navigation warning: be prepared. Mr. Zé Luís speaks in a harsh, almost brutal way, he responds to customers, he makes jokes with them... but this is all part of his way of being, and it is always in jest. There is always a mouth for anything you say at any table, always an answer on the tip of your tongue. But if you play the game, you will realize that the vast majority of them are regular customers, who are friends of the house. And it is this owner-customer dynamic that makes a meal at O Transmontano a very good experience, as if the food wasn’t enough.
And speaking of food, the highlight is Cabidela. Yes, of course. Without a doubt, one of the best to eat in Greater Lisbon. Not only is the dose incredibly well served, it is also wonderfully refined! Intense, intense, like all cabidelas should be but they are in fewer and fewer places because restaurants are afraid. Lots of meat, good chicken, tender, everything in this cabidela is perfect! If you’re a fan of the dish, you can’t miss a visit to O Transmontano (on Fridays or Saturdays).
But Transmontano doesn't live on cabidela alone, especially because there is an incredible consistency in terms of quality in the dishes. The Alentejana Pork is another highlight, again well served and full of flavor. Or the Hake Fillets with Tomato Rice, simple things, comfort food, everything well cooked, everything with the hands of someone who knows and has been doing this for many years.
