The memory of António José Gomes, an enlightened milling industrialist who greatly contributed to the development and modernization of Cova da Piedade, is still today a reference for the parish, celebrated here through the preservation of his house.

The palace, possibly built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, on land belonging to the former Quinta da Piedade, one of the famous "seven farms" of Alfeite, opening its façade to the main square of the village and to its mother church , marks with its eclectic language, typical of the rising bourgeoisie, contemporary urbanity.

The eclectic and erudite style of the project, of French influence (Beaux-Arts), is clearly evident in the neoclassical language of the exterior decorative elements, with a rhythmic frontage of pilasters and rusticated ashlars on the ground floor, combined with structures in glass and iron in Art Nouveau features, these now functioning as a sign of modernity and the progressive bourgeois spirit, also celebrated in the allegories of Commerce and Industry that complete the building.

Inside, whose “excessive” decoration contrasts with the relative sobriety of the exteriors, the woodwork, stuccoes, romantic paintings and revivalist stained glass windows stand out.

To the left of the main façade stands the carriage house, also open to the garden adjacent to the rear façade, surrounded by a wrought iron wall and railing and opened by a rustic stonework gate, which also delimits a pavilion for raising animals and a garage.

An iron daughter-wheel of exquisite design belonged to the property, today located on the grounds of the Preparatory School of Cova da Piedade and classified as of municipal interest, which supplied water to António José Gomes' farm.

The classification of the Palacete de António José Gomes, including the garden, facilities for animals, stable and garage, reflects the criteria set out in article 17 of Law no. remarkable testimony of historical experiences or facts, its intrinsic aesthetic, technical and material value, its architectural and urban design, and its extension and what is reflected in it from the point of view of collective memory.

The special protection zone (ZEP) takes into account the urban surroundings of the property, particularly the public spaces and the oldest building, as well as all the blocks that make up the original area of the property and the iron daughterboard that belonged to it, and which constitutes an evocative element of the rural past of this territory, and its fixation aims to ensure the integrity and the fundamental characteristics of its framework, the perspectives of contemplation and the points of view.
