Anyone who passes through Largo Leonor Faria Gomes today, next to the Paço de Arcos train station, finds a car park, a daycare center and two restaurants, without imagining that that space was, more than 4 decades ago, “practically the center of Paço of Arcos”. This is confirmed by Inácio Lemos, manager of the classic Beira Gare, who moved there in November 1982.
A date that was proudly placed on the restaurant's facade, to show that it has several decades of history. For 40 years with the same management, which Inácio shares with his partner and brother-in-law, José Lopes, (a former employee of Mónaco, the most famous restaurant on the Marginal between the 50s and 80s), Beira Gare has adapted to the changing times.
“In 1982 our strong point was breakfast. We opened at 6:30 am, as all the buses stopped here in the square, there was also a newspaper kiosk and people who were going to catch the train came here to have breakfast. We had a long counter and we served a lot of people in the morning. Then they closed this station entrance, built the underground tunnel and we started to lose customers”, Inácio tells New in Oeiras.
Beira Gare then had to reinvent itself. The café-restaurant began to focus more on the brewery concept, which it maintained until 2017, the year in which it underwent the biggest change since its opening. “We did some major work, we completely remodeled the space. The brewery is no more, we no longer sell tobacco and lottery tickets, the long counter is no more. And all this automatically selected the clientele. We became a middle-class restaurant and started to only serve lunch and dinner”, says the manager.
The space, concept and offer changed to adapt to changes in the area and customer needs. “We have loyal customers who have been following our evolution over the years. Some even come from other municipalities”, says Inácio, who guarantees: “We don't want to have menus, just à la carte dishes, to guarantee the quality of the food and service. We have few dishes, but good ones.”
